'78 Cherokee has clutch gremlin, binding?

Howdy all,
Posting for a good friend that works at the local NAPA store. He's got, if I remember correctly a mid '70's Wagoneer. He tells me that when he put a new motor in it he did the clutch and throwout bearing as well. Unfortunately he had to do his work in the dark when he assembled the motor/clutch/trans.
After only a couple of trips he noticed he had to push harder and harder on the clutch pedal to shift, also when he starts the motor and pushes in the clutch the motor starts to bog slightly.
He tells me that he's confident he was using O.E. spec parts using crossover books available to him at NAPA. He's dreading seperating the motor and transmission again now the off road season has begun in earest here in Oregon (the two week long "summer" period with no rain).
I'm hopeful that he'll find the trouble externally in the linkage, but if anyone has a better idea please post a response.

Thanks and a lift of the lynch lid.

hey gus thanks for the post for me. lol thought the wuestion sounded fermilier, imagine my suprise when it was about me. so to add on to the story; 78 cherokee chief. Took out 360, rebuilt, replaced. in the proccess replaced clutch and throw out bearing. clutch problems start when i was test firing engine, the pivot ball shot out the bell housing. found out why droped trans and put in missing pring and put ball back. put rtans back and checked to make sure lever moved correctly. started adjusting all the way out pedal had no resistance made longer one. got it to shift w/ engine off but pedal barely would go down. in gear clutch in crank engine and truck lunges. in neutral engine running push the clutch and the engine bogs down with clutch pressure. so to correct i never drove it since engine install, hell cant tell issue is resolved.
thanks for any help you all may give.

Hi Nate, from another forum one thought;

--clutch disc in backwards

--issue with pilot

--issue with throwout and fork

--issue with throwout and input shaft/carrier as per prior post

...I'm always glad to help a friend:drunk:

I had the exact same problem with my BA 10/5, turned out my throwout bearing was pouring out fluid from a tear in the rubber after about 2 weeks of driving it, its a aping but it sounds like you may have to drop that transmission again and check man. Try filling up ur master cylinder and just pushing the clutch pedal over and over and over while a buddy checks underneath ur truck to watch for the leaking clutch fluid.

If you used aftermaket parts with OE specs. you shouldn't have to lenghten the push rod to the fork. My first question would be the clutch disc if it was correctly installed like Gus mentioned. Make sure that there's no ridges on the input shaft sleeve on the transmission as well as this will cause binding on the throwout bearing when you engage on the clutch pedal and would give you a hard pedal.

thanks guys. i finally just broke down and took it to a shop. they got it seperated and said the disc was fine and so was the throw out. however the cover arms were not even, so he broke the tac welds on the adjusting nuts and fixed it; put it back together and had everything working than load bang and grinding (which its not doing now) but not shifting. He thinks the major slop in the bellcrank is the culprit so i ordered repair parts to fix. thats it so far, hope that fixes it.
thank again everyone.

I'm glad they finally found the culprit Nate, you're saga reminds me of the one I had with my AMC 20 a few years back. Have a great weekend, my friend.:beer:
