VW Bug-1; Sparky-0

Yeah, that's right....I took on a VW Bug yesterday at work and lost. I was blowing out an irrigation system at an upscale neighborhood in NE Wichita. I had to back the compressor into the drive so that the hose would reach the blow-out connection. (We use those big industrial compressors that you always see hanging from cranes at construction sites). The lady there wanted to back her car out, so I asked if she had enough room. She said she did, that she would pull forward a bit, then back out around the compressor and my van. After saying that, she immediately put the car in reverse and dang near rammed the compressor. She stopped just in time, put it in drive, and pulled forward. Thinking that she couldn't see the compressor, I decided to stand by the rear corner of it so that she would know not to drive that close....MISTAKE!!! She had pulled forward and given herself 3 or 4 feet of room to clear the compressor, me, and the van. Then she hit reverse and backed up directly at me. I didn't have time to get out of the way, and she pinned me between the car and the compressor. Her front tire rolled up my foot and halfway up my leg towards my knee, rolling my foot over to the inside in the process. Her side rearview mirror on the passenger side hit me in the pelvis, and finally broke off the car as it drove deeper and deeper into the soft tissue of my belly! She hit the brakes when she heard her mirror break off, and realizing she had hit me, she put the car in park.....with the tire still 6" off the ground up the side of my leg. I was pinned and couldn't move, stuck in a nearly vertical position, praying that my leg didn't break under the strain. I started beating on the roof and motioning for her to pull forward (thank God she went forward instead of further back). After she moved forward enough, I immediately fell to the ground in agony. I called a co-worker that was just a few houses down, and he took me to the ER. I didn't break anything (unbelievable) and though I had a lot of pain in my belly from the mirror and being squished flat against the compressor, I didnt' have any internal injuries, either. I've got a bad sprain in my ankle, and a lot of bruising and soreness elsewhere, but I lived to fight another day. Sunshine and I got home from the ER around 8pm last night (the accident happened at 2pm). The hospital doesn't supply crutches, only phamacies, but they were all closed. My brother came over and helped Sunshine carry me into bed, and this morning I've been wheeling around the house in my swivel office chair.

I'm glad of 3 things:
  1. Two weeks ago, I had just bought a new pair of boots with steel toes, otherwise, my toes would be pancakes. I've never owned steel toed boots before.
  2. It was winter, and I was wearing several layers of very thick clothing, which added padding to keep me from getting more serious injuries.
  3. This lady chose to drive a VW Bug, rather than the more common Caddy's or Lincoln's that you see in that neighborhood. Had it been a big ol' Caddy, I most likely would have been injured far worse!

VW's suck!

WoW you are one lucky guy I'm glad everthing is ok,what did the lady do?

Sounds like you were very fortunate. Gotta love steel toes. They sure are cold in the winter months but they have saved the ol' tootser toes many times.

Glad to hear the injuries were minimal.

Sparky that is awful! I sure hope your at home and resting on W/C money. That lady needs her dang eyes checked (Or her driving foot). I'm so glad you are okay. I wear steel toes too and find them annoying as hell but they have saved my toes before and I'm sure they will again.

Glad your still with us! Get some rest!
Lady

Dang! Glad to hear that you are OK after all that, sounds like a hell of a day.

Holy crap! Glad you're okay! You and your experiences with emergency medicine...I tell ya.

Now walk it off.

Thats pretty crazy, its amazing how little driving skill some people have

Even though she is a terrible driver, I felt bad for her...she was pretty shook up about it, understandibly so. I had her take off my boot and my sock immediately so the cold air would help keep down the swelling. What she said next still cracks me up: "You really need to trim your toenails, do you want me to do it for you?" WTF?!? Personally, I don't think she is all there, if you know what I mean. She's a retired schoolteacher, and she probably had one too many students like me, and is traumatized as a result.

I put some butter on it....

Sunshine went in awhile ago and got my crutches for me, so at least I've got some mobility. Even managed to put on my TBS a while ago. The instructions said 30 minutes to an hour, it took me exactly 41 minutes to do on crutches. Bad part is, I can't drive it to see if it made any difference.

That really sucks, Sparky!! I believe I would've let the compressor take the hit (unless of course, it was MINE). Did you at least ask that little care "Who won the war?"

If I'd have had the time to move, yeah the compressor would've taken the hit. My main intent at the time was to let her know where the compressor was to protect both her car and the compressor. And as it turns out, the compressor is sorta "mine" anyway. We lease 6 of them from an equipment rental supply company, and we have to sign the papers individually for the compressor we take, in essence making them our responsibility. I got the best one of the six, it was brand new (in May) and as of October 1st when I signed for it had zero hours on it. So, you can see why I was concerned for it's safety. Mind you, I would much rather she hit it than me, but like I said, she backed up so fast I didn't have time to move.

Explains a lot!!! I KNOW I'm pretty stupid................but I figured you had at least as much sense as me.:D

Just be glad she didn't drive a jeep... we'd all be standing around at your funeral right now:D

Went back to the work comp quack this morning (actually, it was a doc I used to work with in the ER) and he gave me another week off work. I called the boss to tell him, and he thought that maybe I could do some light repair work to some of the backflow preventers that had frozen and broken....not bloody likely!! It wouldn't be bad if they were all at the curb, but practically all of them are right next to the house and behind a bunch of dang shrubs....not exactly easy access for a guy on crutches.

My son came over today and put up our Christmas lights for us. I hobbled around the yard giving him pointers on how Sunshine wanted them, and that pretty much wore me out. There's no way I could navigate across some of these people's landscaped yards to do any repairs.
