Update

Wrangl3r93

Well I don't get around to posting much here anymore what with college and all but thought I'd update to show off the new wrangler. I had a red 93 yj but when I lost the brakes and ended up in a concrete wall it looked something like this. Between the wall, my homemade bumpers, and my frame, the frame lost the battle. Insurance totalled it, and it's looking like a likely crawler prospect.

This morning I picked up another 93 yj and everything from the red one is going to be swapped over. Hardtop, air conditioning, 4.0L engine. I'm already in love with it. I'll defend my 4banger to the end, it went everywhere I pointed it, but the first time I got onto the interstate I had a grin from ear to ear. Anyways here's the new jeep.

The red jeep has a 4.5 inch RE x-duty lift that I want to swap over, but the white one has a shackle reversal. I wouldn't think that would cause a problem but just asking to make sure. Oh and Terry I'm gonna have to order another jeepz sticker I just put the first one on the red jeep right before I wrecked it.

Too bad about the red one, but way to go on the white one. I would defend a four banger too, but I've got a lead foot that would argue otherwise.

I say go mild on the white one and butt wild on the red. CRAWLER!!!! Bob the rear, relocate the axle back about 4", weld in a cage and get some 5 points and you're good to go.

Hey, if you want to get rid of the rims and tires off of the new Jeep, let me know. I will take them off your hands!

Check out how low the front shackle is on the white jeep, that's gotta screw up pinion angle and caster, not to mention hanging up on obstacles. I'd take off the shackle reversal and then install the RE lift.

That's one clean white jeep.

Nice looking Jeep. Did the previous owner throw in the shop vac with the sale? LOL!

The shop vac box was full of extra parts. A bikini top, the original shackles, cb stuff, 1inch jks transfer case drop, a bunch of random parts really. I looked everywhere for another jeep and was determined not to just settle for one. I'm very happy with the amount of jeep I received for 4,500 when the 4banger cost me 4,300

Bounty the reversal doesn't stick down any farther than the shackles on the RE lift. I'm not quite sure what castor angle is but the jeep drives good, steering isn't loose, suspension isn't ridiculously stiff, and she doesn't wander. I'd rather not have to take the reversal off, the previous owner cut the perches in half so I'd have to find and weld in new hard points for the leafs to go to. I will if I have to though.

After owning it for a total of 24 hours

The bolt on shackle reversals hang down forever... Mine is nice and compact, but I ripped all the brackets off the frame and put my shackles in the frame

Not to hijack the thread, but what's the purpose of a shackle reversal on a YJ? I thought it was only beneficial on a Jeep with arched springs (i.e., CJ).

To keep in line with the thread, congrats on the new Jeep, Matt. Maybe we'll be able to ride together some day (I'm keeping my options open for the ride on the 19th).

Take a look at this pic, looking at only the white jeep, compare the ground clearance beneath the front shackles to the rear shackles.

Do those front shackles use the leaf spring hanger for the upper shackle mount? If so, then you've lost 3" or 4" of ground clearance and your steering and driveline angles are way off since you've significantly lowered that end of the spring.

The only correct way of doing a SRS on a YJ is to cut and sleeve the frame to mount the upper shackle bolt through the frame, similar to how the rear shackles are mounted.

The benefit of a SRS is better onroad handling, less side to side movement of the front axle since it is now tracking behind solid spring hangers instead of shackles. The SRS is a hindrance offroad because traction to the front axle unloads as you go forward over an obstacle, as the axle now moves up and rearward instead of up and forward into an obstacle. Another downside is ground clearance if not done properly.

So the front is fine but I need to take care of the rear end of the front shackles? If one of ya'll could post pictures of how your shackle reversal was done, I don't mind doing the work if I'm doing it right. And the shackles on there now are 1.5 inch lift shackles compared to the RE ones that are going to be put on it if that makes a difference.

It is difficult to see, but appears to be a stock shackle. the should should be moved foward on the frame about an inch or so, and this is simply guessing by looking. I would be way too worried about inverting the spring under a quick droop and compression. All in all, looks nice. You don't see any clean YJ's up here in the north east, even the TJ's are starting to rot out.

Sorry I didn't realize it already had one done on it. Yea, the shackle bushing needs to be moved up into the frame or the front hangers lowered.

Yeah the previous owner installed the shackle reversal and cut the spring hangars off the frame. I'll just go ahead and move the shackle up into the frame to save myself some ground clearance. I'll search but if I don't find anything I'll go ahead and ask. How far up into the frame do I need to put the shackle? I assume try and get the rear level with the front like stock? And my RE shackles have a bar in the middle, will they hit the frame when I'm flexing?

You're gonna have to lose that bar if it's removable. Otherwise, get some like the MORE that have a removable center piece. Mine is probably 1/2" up in the frame from the bottom of the tube that I sleeved it with.

Here's a picture of mine, it'll give you an idea. This got me pretty close to correct with the caster, and my shackles don't hit the frame. I put the hole a little too far forward though and had to switch to some slightly longer shackles (pictured, +5/8") and it works amazing.

Alright thanks Corrupt that is the first picture I've actually seen and it gives me a good idea of what to do. If anybody has a picture from when they sleeved it that would be greatly appreciated too. I decided that I am going to fix the shackle reversal because the white jeep is my dd. Now the red one is going to receive the stock springs out of the white one in a sprung over fashion. I'm giving it to my friend and it's going to be a joint project crawler for us.
