Is there anyway to tell what my jeep originally was? Renagade? Laredo? The title doesn't say anything, probably doesn't make much difference I'd just like to know.

post a picture on teh internet and let people tell you what they think you have :D

for a CJ you have to do it by the Vin unless it is in close to original condition. the interiors and the exterior decal package are what really seperated most of the cj models.

If I post a pic on the net I'm sure people will tell me what I already know, It's a '79 POS with the rust and bondo package.

It, has no stickers or any markings and has aftermarket bucket seats. If it can be done through the vin number I'm interested but I thought all that would tell you was what engine/trans combo, where it was made, etc. I didn't know there was a digit there to tell what option package it came with. Being that it has a tach, clock, under hood light, v-8 and factory chrome wheels I'm pretty sure it had some kind of upgrade package but then again this could have been added somewhere down the line.

I'm not a CJ person but the options you listed should help narrow down the trim package from what was offered that year. I'm thinking any VIN decoder would not list a trim package such as Laredo or Renegade, but who knows.

most likely is a laredo with a V8, tach and chome wheels. the renegade was just a loredo with a bunch of decals and different seat material.

Bounty, my understanding is that CJ's after the early/mid 60's had a alpha numeric designation in the Vin that gave the model type, as does YJ's and TJ, etc...

my insurance lady ran my vin and told me mine was a laredo. it explains why i have cruise control and all the chrome. try that?

54cj3b, I didn't know about the JU JU thing. Hope you'll let me slide on that. I might should explane it just a bit. It's kind of a joke between me and my son. We crack on my old Jeep quite a bit, but we love it. We both know it has a purpose and that purpose is to be fun. I see people everyday that let their projects take them over and worry about every little detail untill it stresses them. I don't want this project like that. We try to laugh and cut up about the body being rough and other things it needs. It makes the time we spend on it dealing with the problems it has much more enjoyable. Hopefully years from now when I'm long gone and that Jeeps recycled, he'll look back and smile about it. Life is too short to stress over the small stuff.

I decoded the vin and it did tell me that it was originally a 3spd. The 4spd has been added but unless I'm missing something it never gave the info I was looking for. When I got my title I did notice that it had listed on it the body style was MP, does that give a clue?
