My buddy's YJ peugot transmission is stuck in 5 gear..here is the situation

the shifter broke cause soemone did a crappy job welding in an extension into the shifter( done when the body lift was added)....anyway he pulled the shifter out of the transmission to have it welds...got it welded and went to put it back in but now the shifter feel's like it is in neutral but the transmission is still stuck in 5 gear  ...any clues as to why this is and what we can do to fix it?? any help would be appreciated as the jeep is in a mall parking lot and we are about to get a big snowstrom here :(...thanks all

edit...oh yeah..he say it jumped out of revese a few times before the shifter broke too...not sure if that is realevant cause mine does that all the time too and i have to hold it in gear...lol

RE: Clutch Question

You have missed the saddle when you put the shifter back in. If it's in 5th then hold the shifter like it's in 5th when you go back in. If that doesn't work then use a long screwdriver and try to shift the trans to neutral.
I'm not familiar with the Peugot transmission, but they are all similar. If worse comes to worse remove the tunnel cover and pull the top plate of the transmission (if it has one). Then you can install the shifter, line up the forks and bolt it back down.

RE: Engine won

get a flashlight and look in the top of the transmission after you pull the shifter out, see where the forks are lined up at and duplicate that with the shifter, there should be three rows of forks and on of the forks will be pushed forward or back. sounds like the left side fork (remember at the pivot point things become opposite, ie pushing the handle right makes the end of the shifter go left) is stuck backwards.
