i just bought a 88 Wrangler and the transmission is rough,i have a friend in Wv that has a ax/15 from a 96,97,98 cherokee sure which year but in great shape, transmission and trans/case cheap.Just not sure what it will take to swap them.Any help would be very, very helpful. The transmission i have now is the Renault,or Pou,not sure how to spell CRAP,I have been told not a hard swap, but I need to find out from some Jeep guy's.

Thanks

Different pilot bearing/bushing. The 96 and up used a larger input shaft.
External clutch hydraulics--Master, slave, lines--I bought mine as an assembled and filled unit.
Throwout bearing and clutch fork.
Some guys have found that the holes in the transmission that the transfer case mounts to are clocked a little different. Here's a site where they redrilled an AW4-- www.stu-offroad.com/engine/aw4/reclock.htm.
Different transfer case shifter.
Different transmission mount including the bracket that the mount attaches to. I think the YJ has a different style than the Cherokee. Dealer has it.
Possibly a different transmission shifter--don't know for sure.

That's my 2 cents worth. Sounds like you found a treasure. I had to look for 2 years before finding mine.

Thanks Iah2420

I am trying to figure out if this can be done without selling my house.Just joking, the transmission in now makes a loud whine It may be the t/c not sure.Cant trust any of it at this point.Better off to replace it so I'm not stuck on the side of the road. Please fell free to mail me any other tips you have.I'm new to the jeep world so could use any help out there.

Thanks again

Be a lot easier to rebuild the transfer case if you can isolate the problem to it.

I recommend an AX15 from a YJ or TJ, '94+ so you can get the external clutch slave. You can reuse your transfer case if you swap out the input shaft for a 23spline that'll match the AX15 output.

Don't use the factory recommended GL5 gear oil in an AX15, it's corrosive to the soft brass synchronizers. Use Redline MT90 (synthetic) or a synchromesh derivative.
