OK, i have a 2000 jeep grand cherokee lerado.The problem it was having is everytime you would turn it would make a grinding sound and almost come to a complete stop, like the brakes were being used.I had a auto shop look at it and they said it was the transfer case, so they took it apart and said they found shavings and peices of the inerds laying in the case.So long story a lil short they Put a new case in.It has been about 3 months and it is having the same problems.i talked to another shop they said it might be the differentials,That they might have water in them....If any 1 has had the same problem or knows anything about this, could you please post a reply thank you.
Specs.V6..SelecTrac 4-Wheel Drive..some dealership upgrades like gas shocks, and skidplates but otherwise stock thanx
 

is it the 249 t-case? first off i'd try replacing fluids. put some new t-case oil in, see if that helps, check the levels of your front and rear diff's as well, replace as necessary.

if neither of those solve it, try your best to pinpoint the sound. sometimes its hard when you're riding in it to determine the difference between say front axle and t-case. you could pull your front driveshaft out, but if its the 249 case you have, dont leave it out for too long, just do it to see if that gets rid of the sound. does it only happen when you're giving power (eg. braking and/or accelerating?)? does it happen on turns? or only on straightaways?

you could always pull the t-case and look at it yourself, just take out the bolts and break the RTV seal. i actually did a 249-231 swap a few weeks ago in mine, pretty straight forward job. not sure how different yours is from my 96 zj, but i'd imagine they're relatively the same, support the transmission, pull the t-case brace, pull the mount, and there should be 6 bolts that hold the t-case to the transmission, undo those and the linkage and breather hose etc and you can pull the t-case out. take a good look at it, there's a magnet on the bottom to catch metal shards, your hope would be that that is clean. let me know what you find if you try this.

it might seem like a pain in the rear, but its well worth it for the money you save. i got my t-case for $75. didnt have to buy anything else except ATF and RTV. if this is not the case, try pulling your front carrier apart. take out the driveshaft, pull the front yoke (1-1/8 is the socket you need), take out the front carrier (dont let it get dirt on it) and you can take out the rear pinion seal and shaft behind the gearing. there should be two sets of bearings on that, test both of those for excess play/damage.

that enough yet? try all that stuff, we'll see how it goes. why do i know so much useless stuff? i might have had a problem like this in the past. good luck.
