The son was driving home and the NV-249 decided to commit suicide. The only thing holding the front driveshaft up is the chain, the case is in pieces. I was having a slight growl when power was applied and thought it was one of the front axle CV joints, about 3 days before the blow-up there was a clicking noise that started intermittent and then study which I thought was the CV joints but before I could check it out the son was driving home and he said the clicking suddenly became very loud and when he pulled over to look what was going on he could not put the trans in neutral. Had it towed to the house and now I'm debating,,used, rebulit or change to a different(242) tansfer case. Another thing,, is it normal for the 249 to go like this????[addsig]

The first time I´ve heard of a Grand Cherokee loosing a transfer. But I guess it might be expected with the V-8 in there. I´d check my drivetrain warranty real good, a big selling point on the mid ninties, was an extended drivetrain warranty. If you have a heavy foot in the family, who might like to try and smoke all four in part time, a 242 might be advisable. But most people prefer the 249 in snow country.[addsig]

It's a 94 with 167,000 plus someone had the case apart from what I could see(lot of permatex). It is mainly the wifes ride, she seen it a couple of years ago and just had to have it. Love the V-8 and the 249 makes easy for the women in the family to drive even though it is a gas hog. I'll see if I can get some pictures to post, havn't even took it out yet still trying to figuire out what to do and how much it will cost....[addsig]

i belive my friend it is time to take a trip to your local pick a part. You could prbobly pick a new transfer case up for pennies. Most of these places dont know what it is so they wont charge you much at all, i got a new ignition control module, $350 retail, for $22. Heck of a deal if you ask me.[addsig]

I've found a couple of used ones in the $600-700 range and a rebulit for $1200 plus a core charge. Something about the viscous coupling in the 249 is like $600 new. I'm new to this fulltime all-wheel drive stuff,, I'm used to plain old bearings and gears.[addsig]
