Trans fluid change on Cherokee

I have a 1988 Cherokee with a 4.0 and automatic trans and would like to know the easiest way to change the fluid and filter. This does not seem easy due to the dip stick being attached to the pan. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The best way to go about changing the fluid in your transmission is to take it to a shop and have them hook it up to a machine that flushes out all the fluid in the system. Just taking the pan off and changing the filter doesn't get all the fluid only part of it. The flush should be between 80-100 dollars.[addsig]

I've heard a lot of bad things about those trans flushers. I used to be a service writer at a honda dealership that sold those flushes and we had to discontinue the service because of all the come backs and trans's that would never shift the same.

just something to think about.

I work at a service station and the only time I've seen and or heard anything bad about the flush is when we atempted to perform one on my friends 90yj, another of my friends that works there said he had done them on his car, anyway what ended up happening was transmission fluid spilled out and we overfilled his transmission like three courts. After having one of the mechanics help uo do it right it ran and shifted like a champ

I´m gonna have to vote with Bob, I´ve had some bad experiances moving around the little peices of crud in an automatic. Have even had shift problems, from just changeing the filter (sometimes it´s better just to leave well enough alone). Jeep recommends changing the transmission fluids, every 30,000 miles (and they are usually pretty conservative).

My 87 had a drain plug on the transmission pan. I´d change the fluid every spring (alot of high speed driving) and the filter every few years. Transmission was still going strong, after fifteen years.

If you are having transmission problems, changing the oil or filters seldom helps.

I was working on an 89 this weekend that had transmission problems. It has an AISIS 40 - 43LE transmission. The dipstick was bolted to the bell housing. It was easier to get to the bolt from the top of the motor. Then you could pull the dip stick out from the top.
It was built in 2 pieces for this reason.
It really wasn't a big deal. It was very messy though. If you are not a transmission guy you might want to get one to look into the pan while you have it off. They can tell a lot about the particles in the filter and pan[addsig]
