Yes... It's not because of pulling ability - it's because of control and braking. The short wheelbase makes for a pretty squirrly ride. :bomb: -John

As other people posted not much,due to the fact of trying to stop the trailer.If you have a trailer with electric brakes you can handle more of a load.

1500lbs max with or without elect brakes for saftey purposes
tried 2500 lbs with a xj 3:55 4.0 eng big strain on motor and trans and very hard to stop jeeps were not built or designed to tow even though they offer tow packages just a FYI :shades:

Would an 89 5 spd be able to handle a pop up camper?

Depends on the weight of the camper, pop-ups vary greatly.

The manual transmission jeeps are rated to tow more than the autos.

Jeep1, you should verify your axle gear ratio, I don't think that jeep was available with 3.23 gears, should be 3.07, sucky ratio for towing and/or oversize tires.
