To torch or not to torch?

I'm trying to get the spring perches off my D44, tried to grind down the welds with a grinder, cut the welds with a cutting wheel, even chisel them off! They are kicking my @$$ and I just want to use the torch and cut them off that way but I am afraid I will damage the bearings inside or blow a hole right through. So my question is, is it possible to damage the stuff inside? or am I being too cautious...

Torch it!! If your paranoid wrap a wet towel on each side of the axle tube to keep the heat from creeping. Cut it off leaving just enough that you have to grind it smooth.

Torching them shouldn't be a problem, just don't linger too long with the torch, clean up the cut with a grinder as opposed to trying to get a perfect cut with the torch

I agree, Torch it. Keep your torch head parallel to the tube and keep your heat on the perch. You can get most of it off and then grind the rest. If you use the wet rags, just be careful not to set them on fire. Nothing like the smell of molting metal in the mornings to get your blood flowing

i'm all about the plasma cutter... there IS NO alternative to it... they are the best... and.. i've never had a problem cutting ANY part of a jeep with a cutting wheel
