Throttle body spacer question--

I have a 97 TJ 4.0. I see these throttle body spacers for sale but I don't know what they do! Do they increase horsepower or give better gas mileage? Please help![addsig]

yes and yes! Essentially, they create "Turbulence" in the air going into the intake manifold. From what I have read on these, buy making the spin as it exits the TB and enters the manifold, it increases the volumn thus more air for the fuel to mix with!

the whole idea is similar to the carb spacers which were all the rage a couple of years ago.

I have the airaid TB spacer, I installed this prior to my cold air intake tube, and slightly improved the throttle response, by my account, did not notice a milage increase, but I have a lead foot ever now and then, and was not looking. I also got a very faint whistle sound which is from the increased air volumn.

I think it was a good investment, and was a very complete kit.[addsig]

They are specific to all different vehicle due to differing bolt patterns for the throttle bodies. but all are the same basic design[addsig]

The function of the spacer is to increase the force of air into the manifold by increasing the distance the air loads up above the manifold - literally stacking the air. Believe it or not, air has weight, like water. That’s how water towers function, gravity. This theory only works when the air is stacked vertically. A long runner on an intake will reduce airflow.

The newer 'spinning' spacers are contradictory to the physics of pneumatics. The faster the air can get through the engine, the faster that heat pump can intake, ignite, and exhaust the air, the more power.

So, if you 'spin' the air, you aren't making the air go through the engine faster, you're actually causing the air to build-up a pressure block where the spinning occurs actually slowing the air flow.

Do jet engine intakes have this spin feature? No

This is a gimmick to make money. Get a spacer without the spin - a smooth bore will flow more air.

Save your money, get a cheaper smooth bore spacer and spend your savings on a quality lift set.

How much horsepower/mpg is gained by installing a spacer? Any suggestions on which one is a good spacer? [addsig]
