University president poses with 'suicide bomber'

The president of one of the leading universities in the United States last week posed for photographs with a student dressed as a suicide bomber, The Jerusalem Post has learned.

In copies of photos obtained by the Post, University of Pennsylvania president Dr. Amy Gutmann is seen standing with engineering student Saad Saadi at the annual Halloween costume party held at the president's home.

Saadi is seen with a keffiyeh around his head, a toy Kalashnikov rifle in hand and six plastic sticks of dynamite strapped to his chest. Gutmann beams alongside him, dressed as Glinda, the Good Witch of the North, a character from L. Frank Baum's novel The Wizard of Oz.

Gutmann, who is herself Jewish  , was inaugurated as university president in 2004. Her father, Kurt, fled Nazi Germany with his family in 1934.

In other photos taken at Gutmann's party that evening, Saadi can be seen carrying out a series of mock hostage executions, evoking images reminiscent of the series of abductions and murders of Westerners in Iraq in 2004.
In one instance, Saadi stands over a fellow student crouched on the ground, and points a gun at her head while reciting verses from the Koran.

In another image, Saadi poses with an unidentified child as he points Saadi's toy gun at the camera.

The day after the party, Saadi was quoted in the Daily Pennsylvanian, the campus newspaper, as saying that he attended Gutmann's affair dressed as a "freedom martyr."

Founded in 1751 by Benjamin Franklin, the University of Pennsylvania is based in Philadelphia and has over 23,000 students, including a large percentage of Jews. It consistently ranks among the top 10 schools of higher education in the country, and is a member of the prestigious Ivy League.

I want you all to know that so-called Americans were at this party and not only allowed this guy to do this, but accepted it and thought is was amusing.
An "American" university?

This is a sign that we are doomed if our fellow citizens think this is ok.:(

Seems what passes for humor for some is often really poor taste. Take a look at the #1 movie this week and you'll find that to be true.

And in a somewhat related case:

Halloween Prop Draws Bomb Squad

AP Newswire said:
OSLO, Norway - A police bomb squad raced across Norway by helicopter Thursday to investigate a mysterious, wired package that turned out to be a discarded Halloween prop left behind by a young man who had dressed up as a suicide bomber.

The package, with wires sticking out of it, was found at about 9:00 a.m. on a car parked outside the Alrek student dormitory in Bergen, Norway's second largest city, said Asbjoern Andersen of the Bergen police.

The car's owner had no idea what the package was, so police evacuated the dormitory and the surrounding area. Then they summoned bomb experts from Oslo, who flew 185 miles by helicopter to assess the threat.

"We really had no choice," Andersen said about bringing in experts from the capital. "We don't have the expertise (on bombs) because that is concentrated in Oslo."

The fake bomb made national news.

The young man who made the fake device for a Halloween party and later left it behind heard one of the newscasts and phoned the police.

"He did not intend for it to be a bomb threat," said Andersen. "He dressed up as a suicide bomber for Halloween, and called us immediately when he realized the 'device' was his."

The call came more than four hours after the area was evacuated.

Andersen said the prankster, whose name was withheld, had been questioned by police, but it was too early to say what action, if any, might be taken against him.

Bad taste seems to be running worldwide nowadays.:(

I just can't belive that a person could go to a party dressed as a armed suicide bomber and not only does he not get his arse kicked, but these stupid morons think it's funny and pose with him.

 The president of the University offers this letter on their website

:"A letter to the University Community from President Gutmann
November 05, 2006

As many of you have heard or seen by now, there was a photograph from our annual Halloween party that has taken flight over the Internet. The photograph is embarrassing for the University and me alike. I posted a formal response on our website last week. However, I wanted to provide more context.

Following a long standing Penn tradition, I host an annual Halloween party at the President's House. Hundreds of students show up dressed in every imaginable costume -- witches and warlocks, Jasons and Michael Myers, ax murderers and Frankensteins. In keeping with the spirit of the event, I appeared as Glinda, the Good Witch of the North. In this context, it's hard to imagine that someone could create an actually offensive costume, but at least one of our students did.

Part of the Halloween party tradition is the opportunity to be photographed with the President. This year, one student holding a toy gun was photographed with me before it was obvious to me that he was dressed as a suicide bomber. As soon as I realized the full extent of his costume, I refused his request for additional photographs.

Some have mistakenly interpreted the photograph as my support for terrorism. Nothing could be further from the truth. I abhor terrorism, suicide bombers and everything they do. My record is unabashedly clear on this point.

The student has since apologized, and I accept his apology. I too apologize for the offense this photo has caused. Some images are too horrific even for Halloween."

I guess she can chaulk it up to a lesson learned.
I still think if that boy pulled that crap down here in Texas that someone would have shot him claiming he was about to blow up his bomb and the grand jury would no-bill:lol:

You can bet your sweet a-- I wont be watching that movie! They should have never let him in the door wearing that crap!

OK, bad taste, I'll agree. But to beat the crap out of someone because he was trying to come up with something "original" for a halloween costume????...........I don't think so. Not here, anyway. If you want to speak of bad taste, there's countless examples everyday everywhere in this country - one of the blessings of being a "free" country. I'm thinking that's one of the problems plaguing us now - our diminishing tolerance. One of the great things about this country has always been our tolerance for things different. We're full of folks from all different cultures who have also longed for the freedom we've enjoyed here........with all the weird stuff that all the different cultures have brought along.
Most of the "bad taste" things I've experienced have been from good ol' red blooded Americans. Violence solves nothing....it's a shame you gotta bomb the crap out of some people to make them realize that.

Anti-jihad,

come on Mud, so, he could have just as easily worn a KKK outfit or a Nazi uniform and that would have been ok?
I just don't get what in the heck I have to be tolerant of intolerant groups who mass murder races of people in the name of religion or ethinicity.
You come to me with a way of life, or different views of society and I'll give it a thought, maybe I won't agree, but I'll give you room to live your life. But to make lite of extreme Isamic terrorist who are trying to dominate the globe with their brand of religion and murder Jews and Christians is more than bad taste. I think he needs hit right in the running lights with a ball bat for starters.

What this kid really needs is the adults and mentors around him to teach him how to be a man. Teach him right from wrong. To let him know when he is being a punk, and why that costume was totally inappropriate. What he didn't need was some president of his university to pose with him, co-signing his ignorance and rudeness just so she could be "one of the guys" or for whatever pathetic reason she had. That is sad.

When a young man's gross disrespect is responded to with praise from an adult (especially one in an authoritive position like president of a University), then someone is being downright negligent. Yeah I know the college kid is a legal adult but he obviously still desperately needs to grow up and when his elders don't show him that they are missing the mark.

Mud, you mentioned too much intolerance, and I agree with you (I could write a few pages on my thoughts related to that subject), but this is a case of the other extreme - tolerating the intolerable.

KKK or Nazi? No, it's not OK. But it's still no reason to beat the crap out of anyone!! Bad taste? DEFINITELY!!! But it's a Halloween party, for cripes sake!! Cartman came as a Nazi on South Park, and I don't believe there was a national protest about that. Let them know you think it sucks, and go on.

So you'd beat someone for dressing up as Satan? I'll have to remember to keep my nephew out of Texas, then. Last year he wore a devil costume for Halloween.

Or would you beat someone for dressing as a US Soldier? Or how about dressed up as President Bush? In the eyes of the Islamic terrorists, they are just as evil, and just as hell-bent on dominating the globe with their brand of religion.

Lighten up, dude, it's just a freakin' Halloween costume. There are literally thousands of characters you could dress up as that would offend someone. I've been to Halloween parties where people were dressed up as Hitler (or other Nazi's), a KKK member, a mass murderer, etc., etc. Nobody at the party felt like beating them to a pulp because of it, not even the Jews and blacks that were there. On the contrary, they thought it was funny and had a good time with it. America has lost it's sense of humor and it's sense of fun, and that is leaving a bad taste in my mouth.....

So this dumb-arse kid is a member of a group that has mass murdered races of people in the name of religion or ethnicity???????????? I don't think so. He's just another dumb-arse..............we see them every day..............needs to have a mind change not a face change.

MHO,

I sure woudn't be dumb enough to go to Halloween party in an Isamic country dressed as GW Bush.;) If you did and the worst that happened to you was a arse kickin' you would be lucky.....;)

MHO,
mud

He is identifing with them by dressing as one and condoning their actions.

Mud, it's not a good time right now to be showing up with a bunch of fake dynomite strapped to your torso with a gun in your hand, being of middle east descent...people are on edge. If he showed up at the mall like that and went to the center of a display and yelled "Allah is great" some off duty cop would likely shoot him thinking he was a real suicide bomber.

I agree. I don't want to be second guessing if that guy with things that look like dynomite strapped to him are real or not. Its not smart to do, especially with all thats going on right now in the middle east. And i can tell you that I'm sure other islamic members in that college and community were not very happy with the prank.

What is really disturbing is the description of the "scenes" he played out. It truly is hard to believe so many went along with it and somehow it was fun for them.

It is disgraceful to our country as a whole, but especially to the victims who have fallen to the real terrorists: the ones who were killed and wounded in the attacks on 9/11, our fallen soldiers, and the ones like those beheaded with pocket knives.

I definately see some stupid costumes. I have seen some that would obviously be offensive to some. Those need to be taken with a grain of salt, yes, and one must realize that it's a big world out there and people will be people but that kid crossed a line. There's offensive then there's just downright wrong.

Someone should tell that punk that men and women have died and are dying for the freedom to act like an jackass that he so much enjoys.
