I blew up the t-case in my jeep :( and I was wandering if a t-case out of a 97 tj with a 6 and a 5sd will work in my 89 6cyl 5spd (ax-15) and if so what I can do to make it work. Please let me know I haven't had a moving jeep for three months :(
Thanks Evan

They are both ax 15 trannies. Jeep went to the nv4500 in 2001? Both are np231 T-Cases. I know the main shafts are a little different. The YJ shaft has 2 pressed bearings that 97+ jeeps do not have, but this should not make a difference, The portion of the main shaft that goes into the transmission are the same. If I was you, I would try to locate a solid np231 out of a YJ only cause you know it will fit! But unless someone tells you otherwise, I am only thinking it can be done easily.

Easily done, just call Advance Adapters to verify that the input shaft on the two transfer cases will be the same. If it's not, they or Novak will have the correct input shaft to swap in. It's cheap and easy.

While you've got them on the phone, ask about the vacuum switch on the top of the YJ transfer case. It should be there on the TJ case, only plugged. You'll need this to engage the front axle unless you install a manual cable or vacuum switch.

Be sure you have the ASSY# ........ when trying to find a replacement. It is 8 digits on the back of the Tcase, covered in mud. On a TJ it starts with 5. It is coded to reveal outputs, yokes, shaft engagement ect.
