Swing out tire carrier

Were the swing out carriers found on some XJ's a factory option or a dealer install?

I really want to get my spare out of the inside and have looked at some of the ones on the XJ, I don't much like the idea of drilling holes in my rig and it also takes a different bumper for the latch to work.

I am really thinking of building new bumper of of c-channel and going from there, any ideas.. and no I don't have the 6-8 hundred to spend on a ready made bumper/carrier combo. I am trying to poor boy this deal while still looking cool

RE: Do you heat with firewood?

It was a factory option for a period.

RE:

Here are the pictures of my bumper mounted tire holder upper. I personally hate the thing. It looks like you would need to get a new rear door or put some pretty hefty holes in the rear door. Also the weight of the swing out arm with the tire on makes my bumper flex a lot, and the thing makes all kinds of rattling noises.

hmph, the host that i use for the MR2 board for pictures doesn't let me post the links here. Send me an email mr2fyre@yahoo.com and i will send over the pictures.

I also have looked at swing away tire holders they seem to be VERY costly

I'm thinking about going w/ a roof mount anyone got any comments on that?

Re: RE: Re: RE: Do you heat with firewood?

roof mounts are good. I have my (second) spare on the roof rack of my ZJ and it is fine up there.

RE: Drilling new hole for seatbelt?

where did you pick that up at or did you fabricate it (that's what I'm thinking about doing)

One drawback to mounting a spare (especially a big one) on the roof is it will raise your center of gravity. I mounted mine up there for a couple of days and decided to make a more permanent mount in the back of the Jeep until I can afford to get an aftermarket bumper & mount but to each his own.

If you have $300 to spend I have a yakima load warrior on the top of my XJ. I just slapped that bad boy spare right in the middle and used 4 black bungees through the portals in the rim & strapped er' down.
Yakima wants like $80 for the spare tire carrier........ $3.98 for rubber and that mutha hasn't shifted once!
The nice thing about the yakima rack is that you can add extensions to it, 2 to be exact, and that spreads the basket from one end of the rails to the other......looks really cool and you can just cram a buttload of stuff up there! I went ahead and put an extra crossbar in to support the middle though.

Hey if all else fails........ just strap it to your hood!!
(can you picture it....... some lune bombing down the freeway jacked up in his seat trying to see over the 33" mickey thompson)

RE: just a shout out

sorry, one more thing.. you can also pick up light adapters for the yakima for $30/pair........ adds a great light bar to the otherwise unlightable roof........... damn I should go work for Yakima....... I swear I ain't pitchn' for them, i am just totally pleased with the one I have....and my dog loves me for the extra playroom in the back of the rig!

What's going to happen to that "mutha" in an accident? Flying tire coming thru!

I always try to practice not crashing, it has been working well for a good many years now!
But...... supposed there were to be a "mishap" bad enough to say "dislodge" so said spare tire, I reckon there would be a little bit of BMW bowling down I-5 ! (if the crash was bad enough to send er' tumblin the least of my worries would be a ding up door!)

Tires fly all the time in Nascar right? Can't be that bad!

Point taken though my friend!

Actually because of theft reasons I have a coated wire bike lock cable & small padlock also securing it, not tightly but it would have to take the entire rack with it if it wanted to do some traveling

It being the itchy footed spare....

Cheers!

Hi,

My '88 has the factory tire swing mount. Sometimes, I like it (gets the spare tire outside which is good), but sometimes I hate it. I agree with the previous comments about the tire swing being very noisy (and Yes, I have tried PB Blaster on it). There is nothing quite like the sound mine makes in the morning.... though, It does a great job of announcing "Hey, I'm opening the trunk now" to everyone else in the parking lot

If I thought it'd be easy to install, I'd probably say go for it (just due to the convienence of having the spare outside). However, it would likly be hard (and possibly very expensive) to install one due to the different bumper and side mounts, etc...
