Stupid gas tank question

What size gas tank do I have?

I always put in about 15 gallons and fuel gauge says full, but today i was able to put in a little over 17 gallons....................I am confused and need to order a new sending unit but need to know which one to order.

If it is the plastic one, it's 20 Gals, but has a breather tube that makes it fill up with only 15 or so. You can pull the tube out and take advantage of the other 5 gallons, though... but depends on what year you have (I think this applies to 91 and on, though).

I have an '89 YJ 4.2 I6.

So if it is plastic I have a 20 gallon tank?

I am not sure; I know the 15 gal standard and 20 gal option was available from '91, but I can't say for sure on the '89...

just replaced the metal tank and sending unit in my 89 yj i-6 258 it was and is a 15 gallon tank

'89 was a metal tank and I believe 15 and 20gal were options. If you have equal space on both sides of the tank to the shackles, it's a 15gal.
