On my YJ, I have which amounts to a section of dryer vent that goes from behind the headlight to the airbox; do I need this, or will I get better airflow without it? Thanks

If you have throttle body injection than I don't think you can upgrade. All K&N type systems are for '91-'95 YJ that I have run into. Let me know if you can find something to take it up a notch.

You must be talking about the hose that should be connected to the heat shield on the manifold. and yes it should be connected, it is part of the emissions. You can do with out it, but your jeep will suffer slightly in cold weather.

4.2 motor with Carter BBD; it is an intake to the air filter from behind the left headlight to the airbox.

It is allowing you to get a little cooler air than what you would get without it. The power difference without it may not be enough to notice.
