Start-Up Problem

Whenever I try and start up my jeep in the morning, it always takes 4-5 tries before it finally turns over. However, once it starts up and I drive somewhere, it will turn-over fine when I start it again later. I heard this might be a carburetor problem or something. Someone said it was because once the engine got warm, it would turn over a lot better, but it can't start up as easy the next day when it sits there overnight.

sounds like a carb problem to me. My Jeeps have always been tempermental, My CJ used to need two or three pumps on the pedal to get gas in the carb, then hold the pedal down and crank. I replaced the carb, and now i pump the pedal once and then don't touch the gas at all.
My Yj starts pretty hard, you have to pump the gas, hold the pedal down, then crank, while cranking, you have to pump the gas.

The thing about these Jeeps, is that if you don't follow these steps, then my Jeep has no chance of starting.

You should try replacing your spark plugs and your fuel filter, possibly your plug wires too. Both of my cars also did better after I did the TFI upgrade.

Yeah mine did the same thing until I read about it in the owners manual... you've gotta hold the pedal to the floor for a second or two before starting it up (on cold starts) so the engine has some gas to work with.

Also, I recently went from using 87 to 93 octane gas, and the improvement in the carter carb's ability to idle has been astonishing... starts easier too for some reason.

Good Luck,
Jim

I think I am going to put in a manual choke. Does anyone think this will help the problem any?

Try changing the fuel filter while you are installing the choke.
