speedo problem

Hi! I'm new to Jeeps.

I'm working on a 2004 Wrangler. At some point, someone swapped in an older transfer case with a mechanical speedo output, which obviously won't connect, and is causing a check engine light.

How do I convert this to the proper electrical sensor?

Here is my transfer case tag:

Thanks!

You can swap that mechanical unit with the electronic sensor unit. Make sure you clock it correctly in the hole.

according to this i would use 36 IMO hope this helps

This Wrangler is a Rubicon. The link you provided says that these gears are not compatible with the Rubicon.

Is that because the transfer cases are different, or is the Rubicon ECU different? I'm hoping I can just swap in the proper gear and sensor since it is not a Rubicon transfer case and all will be good.

Thanks

That is not a Rubicon transfer case, you just need an electronic speed sensor like any other '04 Wrangler (non-Rubi) and the proper speedo gear.

I know it isn't a Rubicon transfer case. What I want to know is if the output of the non-Rubi speed sensor is the same as the Rubi speed sensor. If not, I'll need to change my ECU, correct?

This Jeep used to be a rubicon, but somebody stripped it of the rubicon goodies and put in who knows what. The 241 transfer case is now a 231, and the locking differentials are gone.

I'm just trying to get it to work again.

Thanks

Are you sure they didn't just put the decals onand call it a rubi?? Sounds odd to me to strip a Rubi down to a standard TJ.. Check you VIn number, There is a site that will show what your jeep came with from the factory.
Also if I recall correctly if your speedo gear is off a lot from another sensor that measures engine speed you will get a CEL.

If I find the link I attach it later..

The signal should be the same, but the wiring connector will likely be different. No need to change the ECU. If you buy a new speed sensor from the parts store it will also include the body side of the wiring connector so you have to cut and splice it in.

Can you post a pic of the connector on the body side of the speed sensor?

Yep, I had the VIN verified today at the dealership. It shows it was an original rubicon, and at one time had a 241 transfer case.

It currently has a CEL on because the speedo isn't connected at all

I bought a speed sensor, it plugs right in to what is left of the broken body side connector. Luckily it came with a new body side connector to splice in

Good deal. The engine computer also uses the VSS signal input so there are some slight engine performance issues if there's no signal, hence the CEL.
