Small spare tire

I have 32" tires and the biggest tire I can use for a spare is a 30". Will this smaller tire cause damage to my jeep if I had to use it or do I NEED to get a bigger one???

you SHOULD go to a bigger one, especially if you plan on doing any off roading. The spare should be at least the seme height as you're running full time. I'm in the same boat as you with the spare tire carrier. In fact for now I'musing the stock tailgate holder (with a 33 x 12.5 tire) and hoping it holds together until I get the new rear bumper.

Rob 8) :P :)

Why is that the biggest spare you can use? The stock carrier is easy to modify to fit bigger.

You can use a small tire only if you have the stock open differential. A locker or limited slip in the diff requires each tire to be close to the same height. You could probably get away with it with a LS but I wouldn't risk it.

I should re-phrase that. A 30" tire (on a stock 6 1/2" rim) is the biggest one I currently have. I will need to buy both a rim and a tire to get a 32. Someone told me that if I got a flat tire and put that 30" tire to limp home I would screw up the differential.

Some manufacturers make a tire size 32/8.5/15 which will alow you to retain your factory rim. As for a carrier, I would not recomend using your factory carrier, it will work, but that added weight will destroy the hinges and the tail gate will sag. the best thing to do is get one that is a swing style mounted to your rear bumper.
I am building my own next week, if you can weight, I can give you a build sheet with part numbers and prices, (this is assuming you can weld)

The stock hinges were shot when I bought her, so I put on a set of TJ hinges, drilled out the stock threads and bolted it on with some heavy duty stainless steel hardware. I think it could take the weight, and I'm going to buy another tire&rim, but not for a while. I just wanted to know in the meantime if I should just take the small one off or if I can use it in a pinch. I dont think my stock differential is a limited slip, how could I tell?

jps4jeep, when you get those done I would like to take a look at them if you don't mind I can weight ....:)

heres some help

If you need to, you can use a smaller spare tire but you might have to do a little bit of tire rotating if you get a flat on the rear. If you use a smaller spare on the rear, you can cause diff damage because one tire will be trying to turn faster than the other. If you get a flat on the rear, just put a tire from the front onto the rear and the spare on the front and make sure you drive in 2 wheel drive.

question

Craig, good advice ...I never thought of that until you said it then I said to myself .."self why didn't you think of that " HEHEHEHEHEHE :) :) :)

J I was trying to be funny get it! It weights too much.... If you can weight.... It is a joke, I get jokes hehehehehe!

If anyone wants to know where to get the parts, I searched the internet and magazines and trade reports for months and I put together a pretty nice unit for some what short money.

Mine will cost a bit more cause I can't find my 75-25 argon-co2 tank for my welder, can only find the 100% argon. So the local welding supply shop wants to screw me for a new tank and stuff for $140!

I think It got lost in the move two months ago!

If you're looking at building or having a tire carrier built, here's a picture of what mine looks like. If you buy one don't get one that attaches to the front (face) of the rear bumper, make sure it goes over the rear bumper. The ones that swing closed to the front of the rear bumper will bend and you'll have problems with them if you do any wheeling and come down on the bumper on a rock. By having it close on top of the bumper it's protected from any damage. You might also want to get d-rings for shackles and mabye even a receiver hitch built in.

Craig,
That is very similar to the one I designed. I will try to load up one of my scetches. For the hinging mechanism, I am using a trailer spindle which when all said and done will be very similar to your hinge. As for the latching mechanism, I am going to use a stainless steel toggle latch that is rated at 2000lb and is completely adjustable. I am gonig to add provisions for the third brake light to keep it legal, a hi-lift jack, and where the factory bracketry was, I am going to mount an air tank. The bumper portion will be integrated into the frame, and will have cut outs for back up lights recessed into the bumper to keep them from getting all mashed up!

The only thing I have not done is get my exact measurements, That is on the "to do list" for sunday.

Hey JPS4Jeep....where did you get your latch to hold the carrier in place. I just have spring loaded pin and I don't like it...it rattles around too much. I want a new latch that will actually hold the swing out carrier in place so it won't rattle around.

Question about bigger tires.

I got my latch from a company called Carr and Lane

I think it was www.carrlane.com Not sure though, do a search and they will come up. I think it was like $38, a little pricy but it is stainless steel and rated to 2000lb's
