Should I keep the claim open or take the $2000?

Ok, here's the deal. My jeep was stolen a while ago and I have it back. My insurance company has put around $8000 into my 10,000 jeep...it looks brand new again. They've repainted the whole thing, replaced the carpets with brand new ones worth about $1200, replaced my dash, replaced my front lights with 130W Stainless Explorer ProComp's, replaced my Wet Oakle seat covers, brand new roll bar padding, brand new sound bar, new driveshaft and yoke and a few other things. They're at the limit now where I have the option to write it off and take $10,000 for it. When it was stolen, they ripped the driveshaft right out of the thing and drove it in 4 wheel drive with no fluid in the transfercase (for how long, I don't know). I'm driving it now and there doesn't seem to be any other motor or driveline damage. My question is this....Should I write it off because of hidden damage in the transmission, transfercase that might come up in the future, should I keep the thing, take the difference of the $8000 that they've put into it verse the value of the vehicle and close the claim for good (which means I would get to keep the jeep and get $2000), or should I keep the jeep and keep the claim open? I'm thinking I should keep the jeep and take the $2000 which I could use for upgrades or any other future breakdowns. My only concern is that if there is tansmission, transfercase damage, and worst case I had to completly rebuild both, it would cost me about $3500-$4000 for both.....remember these are in Canadian dollars which are pretty much worthless.[addsig]

is this the 1993 YJ that's in your signature file? For an insurance company to spend $10k on 1993 jeep, it must've been messed up pretty good. Was the frame bent or damaged in any way? When they 'repaired' you t-case, did they fix it or replace it? If it was replaced, take the Jeep and the $2k. But take the Jeep to a mechanic you trust or the dealer and make sure everything is in good order before signing.

Just my $.02. [addsig]

I do not know the deal in Canada as far as buying and selling Jeeps goes. If it were here I would take the jeep and the two grand. Now it looks great so it is prime lot jeep so it is very marketable. Then I would drive it a while to see how it was going to run. If it is ok, well and good keep it and enjoy the new paint and stuff. If it starts to show any sign of drivetrain trouble trade it in on another jeep. Maybe even a newer one with the two grand you would not have that much if any payments to mess with. That is what ol tug would do anyway. later and good luck tug![addsig]

new carpet, paint, etc...? i'd keep the jeep and get the $2k... if the transfer case takes a crap, just buy a new one... 3500 to rebuild is rediculous... buy something used! something newer! ...[addsig]

I would say take the 2 grand and sell the Jeep you have now. Unless you are attached to it for some reason, I would sell it and buy another one and start over. I am looking to sell mine pretty soon and buy a little Jeep and transform it into a monster. (Chevy 350, turbo 350 transmission, old blazer axles, 12"+ of lift and 38.5's!!!)

But I would say take the 2 grand and sell yours and buy something that you will be able to depend on and not have that little voice in your head sayin 'how long till there are drivetrain problems...'

I decided to keep the jeep and just keep the claim open. They're up to $9500. in repairs now and they haven't even looked at the transfercase or transmission. My claim stays open for 2 years so any other problems I have could be covered. I figure I have a brand new looking 93 jeep with a 2 year warranty.[addsig]
