ok i know this sounds stupid, but how do you get the shifter knob off the transmission, and t-case shifter... i figured there was a screw or something but there are just two flat spot and i tried screwing them off but it didnt work...

on my 91 yj you have to take a wrench and then use your hand and turn in opposite directions on the metal piece that is below the knob, not sure about a CJ-5 tho[addsig]

Never done this... but if you try Quik's method... make sure you don't twist the stick. have rubber coated vise grips to keep it still while you turn the top. I had a friend who damaged his transmission by twisting the stick too much. [addsig]

no, on my 91 YJ there is a metal piece at the base of the shifter knob, its got 2 flat sides that you can fit a wrench over and twist that one way, and the shift knob the other way, you dont actually twist the stick of the transmission....but thats on my YJ, i dont know what the CJ5's is like[addsig]
