Shackle Torque

has anyone out there experimented w/the torque on the shackle bolts? front and/or rear? - i figure looser is better for flex but too loose and bad things can happen.... just curious... let me know if there is some range of play besides the recommended torque specs.... thanks!

i asked my mechanic this question two days ago and he told me that tight is tight thats why there are bushings in there so that you cant over tighten it too much i had my compressor at 125lbs and tigtened it down. the shackle still moves freely so i guess its ok. hth slinky

So can you leave them a little looser if you want to, or should you just tighten them down reall good all the time?

I left mine just snug enough to call tham snug. No torque wrench so I can't help you there. I had those nylock nuts so I wasn't too concerned about them coming loose. Too tight and they will ride rough.

I tighten until they just start to compress the bushing. Use lock nuts to hold them in place and shackles with a center brace to help control side to side sway. Too tight and the friction between the shackle and bushing will limit free movement and stiffen up the suspension.

i would advise to tighten em up good! on my last wheeling trip i almost lost one of the shackle bolts cause the nut backed off! I didnt even notice it was sticking half way out until i got home! :(

That can be avoided with a locking nut, loctite, or even a jam (double) nut. I would prefer one of those 3 options over a stiif ride anyday.
