Selling Out

Here’s something interesting that I read from the front page of the USA Today last week:

$5.3 million dollars worth of American Flags were imported from overseas in 2006. The leading manufacturer of imported flags was China.

Is nothing sacred anymore?

as a former leadworker for 10 years at a foundry who was devastated by chinese competition a few years back , i can say that as long as our young feel "entitled" and refuse to start at the bottom and work their way up like we did that this will continue until it rips the economy ( such as it is ) apart. we have a major tourist industry in wisconsin dells that is manned by almost 60% of kids from the ukrane who will work all day and every day all summer for minimum wage and cherish the money. I would hire 5 kids to get one who would work out. Most of the kids thought they are "too good" push sand or to clean motels and serve food these days....so the chinese , the ukranians and all get our money, and take it with them... three of the kids who worked with my wife a few years back were putting themselves through college... , 2 engineers and an accountant. the buck STARTS with us and ends ..............where??????:x

I think its a pretty tough thing to accept that all you can do is push sand or clean hotel rooms. I definitely felt I was too good to do that in high school or college so I didnt. There are a million jobs out there. Maybe I was lucky but I had a nice cushy/well paying job as a pharmacy tech in high school (got it 100% on my own) and made deliveries on campus in college to get cash when there.

Its silly to think that the US is going to crap because some ukranian kids want to clean nasty hotel rooms. Good for them, let them work those jobs. I didnt want to do nor do I want my kids to do it either. Its better to work smart than hard.

Who buys flags made in China? The first thing I always do when I buy a flag is look to see where it's made. I won't buy one at Lowe's or Home Depot anymore because they look too cheap and there is no telling where they are made. Some of them look like they were printed on a big sheet of plastic. I only buy Flags at "The Flag Store". The owner only buys American made products and they actually look like flags with sewn color strips and the stars are sewn on as well.

I'm picky about my flag, can't you tell? ;)

I've been doing hard labor for 5 summers. I work my ass off for my money. Fortunately, I don't have to pay for my school, but that doesn't stop me from working my hardest every summer. There's something to be said for working hard, it builds character; something that people seem to lack nowadays, especially the generation coming up under me.

NO, NO, NO... Not "Selling out" but rather already "Sold Out":-|

I've been screaming for years about this.
I refused to take a "made in China flag from a guy at our fall parade two years ago and I wrote a letter to the paper about it and the fact that they had a 93 year old X-Japanese POW riding in a Toyota in the parade.

Yep, it don't make sense, but it's too late to fix all of it now.

China now owns around 1 Trillion in our bond debt and two weeks ago threatened a massive sell-off that would send the Dollar plunging and send us into a recession just because our politicians are starting to publicly criticize their cheap, dangerous, imported tires, toothpaste, toys, and wheat products.

it's over, we're cooked.
thanks to the "me" generation.:D

I think (correct me if I'm wrong black87yj) what he is saying is the youth of today think that they are entitled to everything. With the wealth of our country they think they do not have to do things they think are "below" them. Manual labor is one. I have seen this first hand, and it is very dissapointing.

You are so right man, I don't even want to get into the vulgaity of it all. I don't know where peoples heads are at sometimes. Too much irony in the world today. Just take Jeep for an example, the U.S. needed a vehicle that would help them beat Germany and now the Germans own Jeep.

Exactly...there is enough opportunity in this country that you dont necessarily have to do something if you dont want to. Of course applying that as a blanket statement is ignorant and not what I was saying. If the only job out there to pay my bills and put food on the table was to shovel crap, then I would shovel crap. But there are a plenty of jobs out there, get one you enjoy doing. I didnt settle for a crap job that I didnt want and neither should my kids.

It has nothing to do with the "me" generation and everything to do with the older folks going oversees to make a ton of money. If you were a business man that could buy his product for 90% less oversees it would be very hard not to go there. Its very easy for the regular guy to say he would buy and build in america, but if you have stockholders looking for 15% gains every year or the chance to pocket an extra $10million a year, the decision to buy or build overseas is a no brainer.

I just have to disagree with you on that judge.
It has a great deal to do with the "me" generation.

All of the American consumers make choices to not buy goods produced here and also going for the cheap price has made the imports so successful.

The "I don't care who made it, it's cheaper than brand X and I want that one"

Maybe its a little of both. Without the consumers buying the overseas items the old timers could not sell it and without the old timers bringing it over from overseas that option would not even be available to the consumers.

you are right.. it was a vicious circle
