I was told that doing a reverse shackle set up on my '89 YJ will drastically improve the ride and handling. Does anyone out there have any experience with this? Anyone have any suggestions?
I wouldn't say it drastically does anything except empty your wallet. If your YJ is riding that poorly, there are many other issues you need to address:
Are the shocks shot
Are the springs shot, resting on the bumpstops
Are the spring and shackle bushings shot
It's expensive and requires cutting and welding on the frame to do a shackle reversal (SRS) correctly. The bolt on kits alter steering geometry and place the shackle and back of the spring too close the ground. You have to sleeve the frame for the upper shackle mount to do this correctly.
Improvements will be slight, it will track better and slightly less jarring on bumps. A downside is when you're offroad and encounter an obstacle, the tires will compress backwards, unloading traction from the contact patch. A shackle in front of the tires causes the tire to move up and slightly forward when hitting an obstacle, increasing pressure on the tire contact patch.[addsig]
