Rear end noises

I have a 97 TJ Sahara with a manual transmission. When I take off in First while turning from a stop sign or light, There is a popping noise. Its real screechy and does the popping while taking off. I have also noticed it when backing out of my driveway that is on an incline. Its worse when doing this. Can anyone help me narrow this down.

My bet is the rear end is gone/going. Does it have lubricant? The rubber plug Jeep used is a piece of crap and lets the fluid run out and then the bearings go. If you take the cover off and find any metal you will know for sure.

I would hope thats not the problem. but it could verry well be (saddle) id at least try to check the slack in the transfer case chain and the u joints.

The other weird thing is the rear end looks shifted to the passenger side. The Passender side tire almost sticks out past the fender flare but the drivers side tire looks way inset. Like 2 to 3 inches in from the fender flare. And the passenger side wheel has a lot of play when I grab it and shake it. Much more play than the drivers side. When I grab the the passenger side rear trailing arm and push from left to right there is a lot of rattling and play coming somewhere from the rear. It may be the play in the passenger wheel but I dont know. Any other ideas

With the last information I think you need to make sure the suspension is in proper shape. Check all of the bushings and connections. If the rear end isn't lined up that's a problem obviously and the ear end may just drop out and stay behind. Remember, slop is rarely good.

So your problem is that your rear end is making screeching/popping noises? Hmmm... I would say cut off the chili! (Sorry, could not help myself!)

All joking aside, check the spider gears, and make sure you are actaully in 2H (sometimes the linkage acts up, and althought he LEVER is at 2H, the TC is really in 4H).
