Rear Drive Shaft U-Joint Yoke Size

So I went to the parts counter to pick up a spare rear u-joint and they say that there's 2 sizes for my 89 YJ (2.5L, AX5). One has a 3.5" yoke and the other is 3.875". So which one is correct? Anybody know? What the yoke anyways, so I can measure it?

i'm not totally sure.. but i believe that for the driveshaft, you want the smaller one

The first time I changed mine I ran across the same question and I was allready at the parts store so I bought both sizes and compared them during the install, and took the wrong size back during my test drive.

... and you didn't make note of which one it was... did you? Anyone else? I would buy both, but I'm not having a u-joint problem... I just want to have a spare for my out-of-state trail ride next month. So it's past the 30 day return policy from Pepboys.

Clutch/Transmission Issue - HELP!

YJ's had 2 different size u-joints that they used on the differential yok. The only way to know what one is yours, is measure it. On your rear driveshaft follow it down to the axle. Where the driveshaft and the axle join is the yok that they want you to measure. You will need to measure the u-joint from cap to cap. The other trick is to look at the joint at the top of the drive shaft and the one at the bottom. If the u-joints are the same size then you need the smaller u-joint. if it is larger the then the top u-joint then you need the larger u-joint.

Hope this helps
