question about selling my jeep

I have a 98 TJ 2.5 ltr with 135000 miles on it. It's developed an engine knock that has gotten worse over the past couple of weeks. I took it to my mechanic, who happens to be a jeep guy.

I was hoping it was just going to be a lifter but the bad news it that the engine is going to need rebuilt. For the cost of rebuilding I may as well just replace the engine. Either way the work is beyond my skillset and the cost is outside my budget.

If I sell it because I can't afford to fix it what's a reasonable asking price? It has a rebuilt rear diff with less than 5K miles on it. A new clutch with less than 20K on it and brand new tires.

I appreciate any feedback

change oil add 2 qts 90w 2 qts 20/50 and dump it fast that should keep it quiet long enough if your trading it in
where are you located
sent you a pm

I wouldn't do the average joe that way on a trade but on a trade in yep fill it full! I used to work on a car lot years ago, saw lots of temporary fixes. I've seen automatics slipping so bad they wouldn't pull outta their tracks. Then after adding one bottle of brake fluid to the trans fluid, you'd never know there was a problem.

Value is somewhat area relevant. As an example in the Great Northwest Jeeps hold their value primarily due to the winter weather conditions and the close proximity to wheeling opportunities as opposed to say Southern California. In the NW you use the 4 wheel drive much of the time due to the ice and snow, in So Cal not so much. Where are you located?

Just a thought ,but if you butchered it and sold it of in pieces, you might get more out of it then selling the whole thing.

If the oil filter is orange, you may be able to get rid of the knock by just changing the filter. Another thought is whoever did the clutch didn't tighten the bolts on the flywheel enough (I even did that once!)
