Question about my York compressor

Track bar ajustment?

Just got a belt to fit my York compressor and fired it up for the first time. Seems there's a lot of oil coming out the discharge outlet. Filled half the bowl of my oil seperator. I've been told by a lot of people that Yorks pass very little oil through the discharge. I have it mounted on it's side and the suction is on top. I've also been told that by mounting the York on it's side, it'll pass a lot more oil through the discharge vs. mounting it straight upright. Is this true or is there something wrong with my York? I'm pretty sure I have the oil at the correct level...could overfilling it cause this? If there's a problem with my York, are rebuild kits available and do they cost much? Is it possible to run the drain on my seperator into the oil fill hole of my York or is the crankcase under pressure? Thanks.

i would fill it back up, run it again and see if its still coming out, and let it run untill it either doenst blow oil or dies... but thats just how i operate.... fix it or F&*% it up

right on far right. "I'll either fix it or it will never work again" has always been my motto.....

Found the answer to my problem by searching around on Yahoo. Apparantley, the Yorks will pass very little oil through the discharge only if it's mounted upright. If it's mounted on it's side, it will pass a lot more oil. There's a mod you can do to the York that I remember reading somewhere to prevent oil discharge that I'm trying to find.

While we are on the topic of OBA- Is it possible to install the same setup on an engine without sacrificing the A/C system- i know we get knocked for wanting AC in a jeep, but in long island, there are lots of muggy and rainy days

red89yj,

move to the south then you will really know what a muggy day is

Check out www.onboardair.com , they have a mounting bracket which allows you to keep your stock a/c. I think it mounts the York next to your a/c.

sounds like using the arb compressor would have been easier ?
I have a friend with the ARB compressor and it won't run air tools and takes around 4 minutes to fill 1 tire. My York will fill a tire in less than a minute.

Will all york's fill a tire in less than a minute ?
Don't know. There are three different kinds of Yorks...short stroke, medium stroke and long stroke. I have the 10ci long stroke York which is most common and puts out the most amount of air. If you're looking for one, they're very common in early 80's Volvos but you have to change it to accept a serpentine belt. Anyone interested in making their own mounting bracket for a YJ without air, I have pictures of the mounting plate with all the measurements and locations of the holes.

Imagine that, OBA on my rig .......The possibilities are endless .....

White, You 4.3 chevy guys are brutal! You will get a discharge, run it till that discarge is very little, at that point you will be boarder line with the amount of oil that should be in the compressor. Just keep an eye on possible oil consumption! so you don't burn out the compressor, another option is to build a re-oiler from the seperator to the compressor. requires a little thinking but can be done.

I was thinking about making a reoiler, wouldn't be too difficult. Just have to run a small hose from the drain on the seperator to the oil fill hole on the York. I was thinking about taking out the bolt for the oil fill hole on the York and replacing it with a rubber plug or grommet with a hole in the center that the hose would fit tightly into. I was also thinking that if I did this, the oil seperator also takes out water which would be feeding back into the compressor. Shouldn't cause too many problems as long as I change the oil in it regularly.
I think what I'm gonna do is try and modify my mounting bracket to be a little more like the bracket for a YJ with air which will allow me to mount the York beside my alternator in an upright position. That should solve the oil discharge problem.

Drill and tap a fitting into teh housing. I would avoid using a rubber grommet. probably just blow put under the cylinders pressure.
