Get an old CJ, and slowly build it to what you want. You should be able to get a good solid CJ in the $4K range. Now you have $5K to spend on something that will be a practical car to drive day in and day out. I had an Accord. If you need something with more room, get an older XJ. They are a dime a dozen and you could easily find a nice one for a couple thou.
