i got an 83 cj7 with a rebuild 258 with only 4000 miles on it. I went out to start it up today in the cold and it started but the second I took my foot off the clutch it stalled out. I started it back up and started to rev the engine alittle to try and keep it from stalling. But everytime i took my foot off the clutch it would stall. I know the engine shop told me my carb. was a pain in the ass and would act up. Im wondering if I need to get a new carb or if anyone knows what I can do, maybe a quick fix??

Let it warm up a little. Check to see if the choke is stuck or working at all.
When it thaws throw that Carter carb away and get a Motorcraft or pony up for Fool Injection.

I didn't even try it. I just went ahead and bought a carb. We have, however, had a couple folks on here have success with the above link/modification.

You also may want to consider doing a "Nutter bypass". It depends on your local emmissions laws/testing procedures on whether or not it's worth it, but it can get you much better performance out of your 258/carter carb setup.

This applies only to 1983 through 1990 Jeeps with the 258 engine.
