overheating

my 98 2.5l wrangler is overheating. Just bought it two weeks ago. looks like it has a new radiator and hoses. when it gets hot it fills the resivior and then the resivior over flows. I am going to change out the thermostat tonight. Is there anything else I should do?

Try the thermostat first.If that does not get it circulating you may have to flush the system,unless there is a problem with the water pump.

i had a car that did that it and it was the head gasket. check the color of your oil and see if it has a greenish whiteish tint to it or see if the exhuast is pouring out white smokeor smells like coolant.

It just started pooring out white smoke out of the exhuast today. Got an engine light that is a #4 cly misfire. Got a couple of quotes for a new head gasket one was $2000 and the other $900. I can get a refurbished engine installed for $2900. What is my best option. I am a helicopter avionic/mechanic with 12 years exp. but i never really messed with vehicles. would I be getting in over my head trying to do the head gasket myself? Any advice would be great! thanks. engine has 114,000

If your Planning on keeping your Jeep for a long time and willing to spare a $2900 tab, then i would do it. However, if your planning of replacing the Jeep with something newer or better in the near future, i'd go with the $900 quote for the head gasket. $2000 for a head gasket job on a 4 cylinder is a total rip off.. if you do go with the engine replacement, you being Mechanically inclined even if it's in Aviation, im willing to bet that if you replace that engine yourself , your gonn'a say, That's it?..i'm confident that you can do it.

Need to make sure it is only the gasket and the block does not have a crack in it.

newjeepguy, not to one up you but if this king air pilot could do a head gasket job then you can to. (nothing scarier then a pilot with a wench) It was very easy I thought. Get a manual and read up on it. Thats what I did. You need to check for a crack in the head. I had one. Ordered a new head on ebay for about $200.

one more thing you will get dirtyer jet engines are so much cleaner
