oil pressure without engine running.

When I turn the key on my oil gauge on my 89 YJ goes right to 80. When it starts it remains on 80 so I have no idea what the oil pressure may be. Thought it might be the gauge and had other gauges that did not work. Bought a used cluster on ebay. Temp, Alt, Clock , gas gauge, all work. Turn on the ignition oil gauge goes straight to 80 just like before, Does ay one have any sugestions on what to check,?

Sounds like a short. Find the sending unit on side of the block and follow it behind the engine. Make sure its not pinched. See what the reading is if you unplug it. If it changes its a sending unit if not its shorted somewhere.

X2 with what Jester says. You could also try a mechanical gauge if you happen to have one. That will give you an immediate answer to is it a real problem or a bad sending unit/pinched/shorted wire(s).

make sure you ahve the right sender.

when i bought my wrangler, it pegged to 80 as soon as the key was turned. someone had the wrong sender on it.

X2 to Dave's post, in all my rigs I've either added or swapped out for Auto Meter, VDO or other quality mechanical gauges, they may be more of a hassle to set up but nothings' more reliable.

once i figured out the sender was the issue and my factory one started working, i removed the mechanical one that was hanging below the ac vent. they read the same for a week because i wanted to make sure the factory one was reading properly.
