Oil pressure sender

I have a 96 XJ 4.0 with an oil leak on the pass. side of the motor. Looks like it's coming from the oil pressure sender Do I need a special socket to take this off or can I get bye with a box wrench ?

Is it leaking where the two halves come together or out the top by the electrical connection? If it looks like it is down near the threads, it is more likely to be the "O" rings for the filter adapter and what you are seeing is seepage from there.
I always use an open end wrench, rock it a little before I try to remove it. *Some* have what look like a place to unscrew it with a large wrench on the pot part of the sender, I've never had any luck there. I always use an open end on the fitting near the base. There are several different models of the sender I've seen. each with a slightly different setup to remove them, most all have a nut type fitting near the base. I always try it by hand first, one time in four you can unscrew it by hand, be careful not to twist the top of the two halves or snap it off.

I thought it was coming from the sender. I cleaned it off to find where it's coming from the best I could but the fan blows it around alot. The oil gauge was not working right so I figure it's the sender. Hard to tell where they're so close. Have to fix that anyway so try first.
If it is the filter adapter where can I get new rings ?

Went to AutoZone to buy new sensor. Old one 2 term, new one 1 term. Oh don't worry you have 1 wire going to it. It will work.

Well it don't, second you start it it pegs past 80. What's up ?

Well, sounds like IT"S THE WRONG PART!! Actually, I had to change mine recently and was warned the Autozone would give me the wrong part. It's something wacky in thier computer system. I lucked out though and got the right one. I wish I had my old reciept so I could give you the right part number....sorry.

Solved the problem ! Though I have a 96' it has a 95' sending unit in it. The 2 pin that EVERYBODY shows as listed for the 96'. The 1 pin that was in my 96' is listed for the 95'. Don't know if this will help anyone here in the future but the Autozone part # for the 2 pin is PS271, the one for the 1 pin is PS233.

Thanx for the tip, I've got the same thing going on with my 96, it has a whole lot of 95 parts in it. O2 sensors are 96 front, 95 rear. The harnesses often don't match the 96 wiring diagrams.
I've only got one wire going to my oil sender and have to replace it soon.

I have 1 wire allso, though it's a 2 wire connector. So you'll be needing the 95' part. Just a FYI you'll need a 27mm wrench to take it off and on. I was stuck using a large adjustable and it wasn't fun.

At the base of the sender should be a smaller (1/2" or so) fitting that you can get a grab on. Watch when putting the new one on, as the fitting it threads into is only brass (oily and dirty, but it IS brass), and can crack pretty easy.
