Nut in Frame Broke Loose Replacing Rear Leaf Spring on 88

While replacing the rear leaf springs on my 1988 Cherokee, the welds holding the nut in the frame broke. It was in the front support and there appears to be no access to this nut. I know what the problem was, after I cut the spring and bushing away, I could see that the split collar had corroded to the bolt. This kept the bolt from comming out and ended up pushing the nut from the frame. Anybody else had this problem? What was your solution?

Do you have access to a welder? We broke a nut off the frame of my Xj. We ended up welding it to a long piece of welding rod and fishing it through the frame and getting it started with the bolt from the other side. Yes it's a pain. But it did get the job done.

That works..also, if you do have access to a welder, another way is to cut a small square section on the side of the hole where the nut used to be and drill a hole on a steel plate that will lay flat inside the "Frame" (unibody) ,weld the nut on the steel plate and run your bolt thru and tighten it. tack weld the steel plate on the inside and reweld the section you took out earlier..

You might also goto a good parts store such as NAPA and ask for a riv-nut. They're for what you describe, only being accessable from one side. We used them in a few places on the 2 1/2 ton military trucks, the nut itself is mounted to a washer by collapsing legs of a soft metal. I hope riv-nut is more than a hillbilly term for something we didn't know what else to name.
