newbie needs help

Thanks!!! One last Question. If i Remove these gimpy fender flares completely and just get a cheap One or two inch Body lift then how big of tires will fit? Any chance of 33s? I really. Like the look of 33s!!! Thanks every one

As long as you run a wheel with 3.5" of back spacing you can run a 33 with a 2" lift but the tires will rub on the fenders when off road.

BTW if you do put a body lift on, you might as well go 3", its not any more work to do it. Just buy the right kit for a yj and follow the directions. If your mildly mechanically inclined you can do this in your driveway in a day....

but a 3" looks funny because of hte huge gap between the body and the frame. and then if you get in a wreck, with the body so far from frame, the bolts might break and you and the body will fly away while the frame stays put.

not sure if thats ever happened, i am just thinking of those 10 or 11 long ass bolts trying to hold the top half of the jeep to the bottom while the body lift bushing let the top half move so much. i am not sure of the shear strength of a 3"longer grade 10 bolt or whatever but i would think it would have a hard time hold 1500lbs in place when the frame comes to a dead stop at 45mph and the body tries to keep going. there is going to be lots of shear and bending going on in those long long bolts and i image they will take a lot less energy to break in half.

just my thoughts on the idea of a large body lift. no idea if they are true or not

A body lift uses grade 5 bolts, it allows the bolts to bend, a grade 8 or higher would snap. You really can't tell the diff between a 2" and a 3" unless you have the 2 side by side....
I am not a big fan of body lifts, but they do the trick, and they are fairly cheap. You can do this now and save for a spring lift, or a shackle lift (daystar makes a nice shackle). Get a 4" kit from Skyjacker, superlift, or rubicon express. They all make nice kits, just make sure you read all of the directions or have someone install it for you.

And no the body won't come off the frame from a body lift, unless its a rusted pile of crap that shouldn't be on the road anyway.....

i always worry about that with those tall body lifts. maybe its just dumb worrying but i still worry about that.

hey, good news!!! i googled jeep body lift accidents and then body lift accidents and body mount bolt broken, and a few other variations of the subject and could only come up with one solid picture of a 3" body lift on a jeep that had been in an accident and the bolts had bent or sheared off. i found lots of pics where people were speculating that the jeep had a lift when it got in a wreck but only one solid pic. so, it seems that my95yj is dead on saying the body won't come off.

you guys try googling and see what ya'll find because i only searched on break at work with my computer that only lets me open some things. lets see if we can find anything actually showing the pictures of a jeep with a body lift that came off in an accident. this sounds like a myth busters deal

Lol. Cool thanks guys I'm pretty strapped now after paying cash for the jeep and a few days later buying new Corbeau seat and Hurculining it. So Maybe a 3 inch body lift will get me by for awile. I'm just sick of looking at the ten speed bicycle tires on it!!!!!

Get some rubicon rims and stock wheels. That's what came on my 87 when I bought it and they were monsters compared to my wife's stock 93 wrangler
