New Starter

I debated whether to post this in the CJ, YJ, TJ forums, but decided to go ahead and put it here, since it isn't really a question as much as a short story of my day.

For the past 6 or so months, my starter on my YJ has been making horrible noises.....you know what a big block V-8 with a supercharger sounds like when it's started? Kinda like that. In fact, a guy at work the other day asked me if I had a supercharger under the hood. So, yesterday when I tried to start it to go to work, the battery was dead as a doornail. The battery is only a few months old, so I was pretty sure it wasn't that. Haven't had any symptoms from the rest of the electrical to suspect a short or draw anywhere, just died out of the blue. So, I decided to get a new starter to see if it would help. Seeing as how the old one sounded like death warmed over for so long, I didn't figure it would hurt. I took today off to work on it, and got up bright and early at 10 am to get started. First thing I see when I crawl under the Jeep is two Torx bolts staring me in the eyes from the starter. I've got the male Torx sockets, but I didn't have any female sockets. So, off I go to Advance Auto to pick up a set. 60 mile round trip. I also decided to pick up a can of PB Blaster just in case. Glad I did. Got back home around noonish, squirted some PB and had dinner. Went back out and grunted, strained, and nearly soiled myself trying to get the bolts broke loose. Fearing I'd twist one off, I hit it with the PB again. Took a little break to watch some TV and went back out. After much more grunting, I got the starter off, loaded up with the wife, and headed to town. It was now around 1:30 pm. Of course, bringing the wife was a BIG mistake, as she had an agenda of her own that took us to a few different greenhouses, Lowe's, and WalMart. Got back home around 4:30 pm. If it had been me alone, I'd have been home around 2:15. Anyway, got the starter back on and it sure is quiet!! I never knew how quietly you could start a Jeep before!!!

I'll see if it starts in the morning, and if it does, I'll know the starter somehow drained the battery. If it doesn't, at least I've got a new, quiet starter that won't leave me stranded somewhere......

My starter had been making similar horrible noises, for several months. I new my battery was getting weaker by the day, and eventually upgraded to an Optima bluetop. It cranked so fast, it killed the already weak starter within a day or two. Just goes to show how long you can limp parts along, and then it's the domino effect when upgrading.

I have the female torx sockets, but I've always been able to get away with using a standard socket of some size, i think it was a 12 point 10mm...

If your battery drains again you may need to replace your starter relay on the firewall. Basically, If the relay is sticking in the closed position it is draining your battery through the alternator. Smart move getting a new starter though.

Yeah, I tried that, but it started to strip the bolt head.

Jaymz77: Thanks for the tip, but it seems as though the starter fixed the problem. Haven't had anymore problem with battery drainage!
