New Jeep owner

Ok, so I just acquired a 78 Jeep cj7 with 3 speed and 304 engine. It has 63000 miles of which atleast 20, 000 were towed miles. I want to make this as stock as possible but not full on restore. So far i have noticed lots of play in steering wheel before it turns(no ps) and lots of lean when it takes turns. Any advice on where to start for a 31 year old jeep.

Thanks in advance

Check the tie rod ends, ball joints, track bar, intermediate shaft, and steering gear box. All these components contributes to a loose steering and poor response. It would be best that you have someone help you by turning the steering wheel back and forth while you observe where all the exessive endplays are.
Welcome to Jeepz.

I had a 78 with manual steering and the box always seemed to get loose for some reason. I rebuilt one with new balls and it was OK for a while but then it got loose too. Check your sway bar in the front. But keep in mind, those narrow track CJs do not handle like a new Jeep and will tip easier. You have found a cool "vintage" Jeep (boy, that's a scary term - I remember when my 78 was brand new at the dealer). Best of luck - John
