i had a friend total out a 96 cherokee sport with 4.0 6 cylinder and automatic transmission. he is selling me the engine for dirt cheap. will the transmission work also? it was 2 wheel drive?

You'll need a transmission from a 4wd Jeep in order to bolt up the transfer case. If you can find an AW4 from an XJ it has the overdrive 4th gear.

what about a torqueflite 999 would there be a difference in driveshaft angle between the 2? what transfer case would u recommend?

Power Steering Mod

The AW4 has the benefit of the overdrive, but it's long and would need a relatively short rear driveshaft.

What drivetrain do you have now?

i have the 5 speed manual transmission. im not sure what it or the transfer case is. all i know is reverse barely works and 5th gear dont work at all plus the other day i was mud riding with some friends and it took my at least ten minutes to finely make the 4 wheel drive kick in. im looking for a good auto transmission to put in it.

The 4.0L and auto transmission would be a good upgrade for you, once you have a transmission that'll bolt to the transfer case. You'll need to change the transfer case input shaft to match the auto transmission. You can learn a lot about that here: http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/np231.htm
Your transmission should be the Peugeot BA10/5 that was behind the 4.2L from '87 to mid-year '89.

Losing Oil Pressure Really bad

isnt there a different computer for the auto from a cherokee tho?
