What kind of v8 motor could I use to replace my straight 6 with. And what trans and transfer case. 97 wrangler

You choice of motor, transmission, and TC comes down to what your budget is. Paying someone to do it is $$$$, doing it yourself or sweet talking a friend into helping is less money but is more time. Do some research on the V8 and powertrain packages available in both your local junk yard and money depending some of the turn key/crate engine combos. Novak is a good place to start, they have a great knowledge base on engines, transmission's, etc. Advance Adapters is another good starting point.

Another consideration is to supercharge (or even turbocharge) your six. A lot of guys have found a modest V-8 conversion to be fairly costly and not much of an improvement. As far as bang for the buck goes, a supercharger can provide decent power increases for (usually) less financial outlay and is a lot less work.

There's also the option to build a stroker with your current engine or a donor 4.0L, or to buy a stroker crate motor. This saves money on adapters and having to replace the transmission and transfer case, and gets you into v8 power range.

If you go with a v8, grab the transmission, transfer case, and wiring harness from the donor vehicle to save big bucks on adapters.
