maint req'd light is on....

it wants its oil changed. My toyota Yaris does this and that's what it means for it. I'm just assuming its the same for your Jeep. Usually if its a engine problem or something electrical it would say "service engine soon" or something like that.

I dunno. Maybe somebody can back me up or prove me wrong. Not sure why a 91 Jeep would say that. I figured that would be on the newer models. My 04 TJ has never showed that. Only thing I've ever seen from it was that "service engine soon" light and that's because it threw a faulty code which I corrected by turning the key on and off 3 times.

You might want to take it to an automotive parts house and get a free scan to see if there's any Dtc on your ecu. Lisa is correct on the "oil change" minder, but your Jeep is a 91 and i dont think that it was for that feature.

Maintenance required comes on at 82500 miles. That's when you're supposed to replace your o2 sensor. I've been told that there is some chrysler scan tool that can reset it. Supposedly there is a timer under the dash that causes the light to come on once at 82500 and stay on. The dealership is supposed to replace the o2 sensor and put a new timer in so the light comes on again after another 82500 miles. If you can figure out which component under the dash it is, unplug it. I haven't found it yet myself, and nobody has posted a picture on the internet that I could find. Hope this points you in the right direction.

YJ's are OBD1, so no oil change... Could be the O2, but I dont know... This is one of the reasons I bought a scanning tool compatible with the YJ; reading the dash light was a PITA!!! By the way, you are aware that there is a trickto read the codes by turning on and off the IGN switch, right? Then the CEL light will blink to indicate the code. Counting, however, is not as simple as it sounds...

The trick to read the codes is 3 cycles of the key from ignition on to off. This will give you trouble codes if the Check Engine Light is on. The Maintenance Required light is a separate function, dealing only with the emission system. Has nothing to do with a system failure, simply the number of miles. 99.9% sure on that.

Thanks for the advice, I took off the catalytic converter though. I took my O2 sensor off, could that be the problem. and she has 170000 miles on her but still runs like a champ. and I live where we dont have to take through emissions. Can I just take the light out?

The little mileage timer is separate from the o2 sensor. It's just there to tell you when you are supposed to replace the sensor, not if it actually goes bad. If you're at 170k that makes sense since it is a little more than twice the 82500. Probably on it's second timer. You can just take out the light. I'll take a look at mine today. If I can figure out where the timer is I'll take a picture of it.
