I have a 91yj,4cyl,33" tires.I believe I have dana 34 on front, and 35 on rear.Am I gonna have a problem breaking axles if I install lockers on the rear. Not gonna be rock crawling, just trail rideing.
If I need to upgrade, what would be the best thing to do.

correction, you have a D30 front.

with a 4cyl and only 33's for trail riding, I'd lock the 35 rear, actually, I would just weld the gears. before I did that, I would pull the shafts out to inspect them, is any splines look twisted or rolled, I would get new to you shafts ASAP. also, get a lot of 90+ spare D35 shafts. for a little and by little, I mean little more strength, look for a non-clip 87-89 d35. probably get it for free, all 4cly have 4.10 gears so should be complete bot in.

Not the best pics, but this MJ had a d35 rear, was bone stock, welded spyders, 35x15.5 sx swampers, lived a very hard life. wheeled hard for about a year ( almost every weekend getting flogged) and the rear d35 never broke... infact, the jeep split in half before the an axle broke. the saving grace for this jeep was that it was a 4cyl and auto, so a lot less abuse than if it was a 6cyl manual.

I have a 93 with the 4 banger standard trans. the best thing I ever did was weld the rear, but I only drive mine when we go out to play on trails. I don't drive mine daily or I would invest in a locker. But boy what a diff off road cause I have a cable actuated front axle so I have 2wd low range, I barley lock in the front anymore

I ran a welded d35 for years behind my 4banger, on the street and trail. Ran one in the front too. Now I've upgraded from lincoln lockers to spools, KISS simple traction all the time.

what would be a suitable cheap locker for the d35 and d30 i got the 4 banger and 35" tires i dont do rocks just trails smalls hills sometimes, alot of beach sand and snow. i just want something to get me out of a jam when i get stuck or when one tire is in the air. i wont be forcing her when i get stuck because i got a winch (superwinch lp8500) so no rocking back and forth.. what do you thing of "lockright"? but my problem is i drive abotu 80% DD and 20% offroad. also i got 4.88 gears installed so how do i go about buying a locker what do i ask for? sorry if this sounds stupid haha

Lock Rite is good and cheap but if you're on the street most of the time I'd get a Powertrax No-Slip instead. Costs more but it's smoother. I'm new to Jeeps but experienced in Rangers, dudes on the Ranger and Explorer boards love them.

ok can you explain to me how the powertrax no slip works.. will i feel it on turns as a DD and how much will it make my jeep posi.. will both tires spin if the have traction? or if i am stuck in snow or sand

I wouldn't recommend locking the d35, especially with 35" tires. Regardless of where you wheel, the locker will lock under acceleration. This sudden shear force of locking is tough on axleshafts. The increased leverage of the 35" tires will snap your axleshafts in short order when the locker locks up.

Aussie locker works great. Wiuld look at an 8.8 ford diff though cheap and most had disk brakes. Usually a simple bllt in. Spring perches are spaced the same and pinion yoke takes the same u joint

i know a guy with the cherokee running 6cyl, 35's, D35, and he runs a lockright.. i seen him in some crazy places off-road and in town when he leaves a set of lights he gives it what ever she got, i know this for a fact because i been in with him.. we tried everything to break this D35 but did not succeed. even tried rock climbing and still no break, even when popping the clutch. we even tried spinning on ice and catching the tires on rocks but nothing. he been running it now for at least 5 years. so why is it that everyone tells me that i will break my axles? i am not calling you guys liars because i know you know alot more about it then i do. i just not sure what road to take..

I would carry spares and drive it till it breaks. I broke 3 35s with 31 inch swampers. I upgraded when i went to 33s. I dont fix it unless its broke but my jeep is its own parts department i could re bearing my frt and rear diffs and change my head gasket on the trail if need be. I go alot of places where i can only use a sat phone or my vhs off a repeater. I would use the 35 till you have problems.

You could get a factory trac lock diff carrier from a wrecker. Or the aussie locker. Its strong. A little noisey but cheap. I wouldnt spend a ton on the d 35. You could get a limited slip 8.8 for the price of a locker. Or a rubicon 44 with the electric locker. I would drive it till you have a problem.

again, just weld the diff. if you lock a D35, regardless of the tire size, it will eventually break. not a question of if but when.

Like I mentioned above, 87-89 YJ d35 are marginally stronger, but the D35 is still a very weak axle.

thanks at folks.. i can get a lockright for the d35 for under $200. i am gonna try it i think and if/when it breaks then i got a good excuse to upgrade haha thanks again

Oh and you will break the rear end and it will cost you to tow it home.
there is no driving home a broken dana35.
