There is a leak in my oil tank...i had my mechanic check it out to see if he could fix it and he said at this point, if he was to do anything, it would probably lead to me needing a new engine....does this sound like...legitimate? or like he just didnt want to deal with it? haha....he told me to just check my oil every week and to just keep adding oil when i need it...so...i dunno...i suppose i should just listen to what he's saying...but, i figured i'd see if any of u thought that sounded a bit odd... thanks..

Most likely need to either replace the oil pan gasket or the rear main seal. Neither will warrant needing a new engine or a rebuild. Are you sure it's the oil pan, it could be something on the side of the engine, oil pressure sending unit or something.[addsig]

when u say oil tank do u mean oil pan?if its ur oil pan just get a new oil pan.i have never heard of ne1 getting a leak in there oil pan causing them to get a new engin unless they were to stupid to keep an eye on there oil level.so my advice is to keep and eye on ur oil level and its a pain in the @$$ because my oil pan was on back order for 3 monthes.[addsig]

We all want to save the environment. or get through inspection (they often frown on oil leaks

). A little seepage is normal for an older motor. The inline 6 leaks a little at the rear main seal (often), changing the seal is a pain and takes some hours to do (took me six). And often is a waste of time, because the crankshaft main bearings are a little loose (time consumming and costly to fix correctly), and the seal wears out again in short order (six months to a year). Often makes for a stinky motor, as it leaks on the exhaust cross over. Back in the old days a quart for five hundred miles was considered the cut off point. Now on days it´s about tripple that, 1500 miles to the quart and then you need to park it over a kitty litter box. But like the man. said low oil leaks, often start somewhere higher on the motor (which are easier to fix) and are often hard to find.[addsig]
