Leaf Over?

So here's me dilema, I've been contemplating wether to go with a 3in lift or do a leaf over conversion. I've been told that the lift would be easier in the long run and I wouldn't have to worry about axel wrap, but on the other hand the leaf over would let me keep the stock springs which give the wheels more travel as compared to the stiffer lift leaves. I'm not sure about the cost comparitively but I'm guessing the leaf over will be cheaper in the short run. Just looking for some input, and maybe someone can tell me how much it would be to do leaf over and add a third member to correct the axel wrap. Thanks, Paul :-D
Oh, by the way its a YJ, as if the cost would differ from a CJ

If you will look <----- over there and down a bit you will see the best kept secret in the Jeepz universe. Not giving you a short answer and you do not see it that way just that there is so much great advice over in the search area on SOA conversions that if you read it all you will be so informed that you will not belive. I use it a bunch and it is the way to go. I just found a set of Ford 9" diffs out of an older Bronco so now for the 1st time I to am seriously looking to go the SOA route. Keep me posted on what you learn and deside to go with. I will do the same. Tug[addsig]

if you ask me... the soa is much better and much better on the wallet... that is until you get crazy in love with it and start buying everything else you'll want now that the jeep will be higher[addsig]

The SOA is a sweet lift that performs great, but it is by no means inexpensive. You need to install a SYE and CV shaft to do it correctly, a minimum of $500 right there. Not to mention spring perches, shock mounts, brake lines, etc.

To decide on your lift, what size tires do you want to run and what type of wheelin do you do?

Also consider:
  • Add-a-leaf for 1.5" to 3"
  • Lift shackles for up to 1.5" (I hesitate to recommend)
  • Body lift up to 2"
  • TJ fender flares will allow tire sizes about 2" taller
  • Spring lifts up to 2.5" require no driveline modification

Consider any of these, or any combination. I run 1.5" AAL, 1" BL, TJ flares, and 32"x10.5" tires with no rubbing under hard offroad use.[addsig]

if you have a welder, and can be creative, its a very easy, and inexpensive lift... but to buy all of the parts, that is when it gets into the wallet[addsig]

well if you just get a kit for it you can do it for 75 bucks plus driveshaft mods and shocks so it's not that bad. im doin one in 2 weeks (waiting till schools out and have some time off from work) i'm probably just gonna lower my tcase and get my shaft extended (told it could be done in my driveshaft post) I'm lookin to go as cheap as possible haha. I'm tryin to get together some $$$ now so i can do it semi right :-D . [addsig]

Ok guys and gals slight change of insight. I found a 2.5in Rancho lift for a very reasonable price. I was thinking about snaching this up, what do you folks think? As of now I have .5 in shackle lift. If I add the lift, would I still have to throw in a SYE kit? Would I need a pitman? Oh, by the way, the kit is used, does this really have an affect on the springs? I'll be finding out soon what kind of abuse the leafs took so , that might influence my buying decision. Shoot me some input... Please,

Paul

you will be just on the verge of needing driveline mods... but you can drop the rear of the TC 1 inch to make that easy... but then... that lowers your center clearance[addsig]

One more question, I know 31's will fit, but will 32's fit and could I fit 33's and haven no problems with rub if I cut about an inch all the way around the fenders. [addsig]

i have a 2 inch lift and trimmed flares, i have 31s with much clearance, never rub.. i can fit 32s... if you have a 2.5 with another .5 shackle, and trim around the line on your flares, you will fit 33s[addsig]
