Years ago when I was just a dumb kid I had a '69 Buick GranSport 400,
had a timing cover similar to AMC motors. So had to replace a leaking water pump and in the process I snapped off two bolts into the timing cover. So Pulled off the timing cover and extracted the two broken bolts. Thinking that it'd be better to go with grade 8 bolts I went down to the hardware store and got for both the timing cover and water pump~WRONG.
Three of the new grade 8's snapped off in the block~one extracted, another drill bit broke off in recessed hole, and the third broke extractor withing recessed hole. I gummed everything back together with RTV and the remaining bolts, took it to a local dealer and sold it for my first Jeep, a '77 CJ5.
My mistake? Failure to chase the holes with a tap to make certain no crud was in there.
All's well that ends well, it got me into Jeepin'
