Jeep parts dept alternatives?

Hey all,

Sunday I ripped off the front propeller shaft dust boot on a trail ride (oops). It's an easy fix, drop the shaft from the diff yoke side and slide the old one out and new one on. No worries right? Well it seems my local jeep parts guy wants $44 for the boot. Seems kind of spendy for a rubber dust cover doesnt it? Especially since I've learned that if I break a stock peice, it'll probably break again someday. I'm wondering if anyone knows a universal boot or other make boot that will work as well for less and preferably from the local parts store instead of the stealership.

Thanks in advance.

Can't help you much with the part you are asking about but I always go to NAPA first to see what they can come up with. Seems if they can get a part I need it is 25 to 35% less than the dealers price. Some times I just have to bite the bullet and go with them though. tug[addsig]

i work at an auto parts store, and we can get most parts for any cars, but some items are dealer only, ($$$) try a junk yard or ebay[addsig]

I actually tried 3 parts stores (to be nameless) before going to the jeep dealer. None had it and not a single guy would even consider looking (or letting me look) at any other CV boots in stock to see if I could make one work. One guy didnt even know what a propellar shaft was. They were all equally stuck on me spitting out a make, model, year, and punching it into the computer. Wouldnt lift a finger beyond that. I suppose I could have ordered it but I was stuck on the thought that "YOU MUST HAVE SOMETHING BACK THERE I CAN ZIP TIE ON THAT WILL WORK"---coffee may have been clouding my decision process.

I miss the good old days when the guy at the counter knew what parts were what and could tell me what crossed over and worked for a given need. At least the jeep guy knew what I wanted, he just wanted a bit more than I would like to pay for it.

I did get one reply from a rock crawler who said he hasnt run a dust boot in years and just cleans and greases every couple of months. I'm not sure what I think about that but it means I'm probably not going to have any problems short term and gives me time to think about alternative boots (duct tape??. :-O j/k) No trail runs scheduled this weekend anyway :-( .

thanks for the replies
