well, i know a lot about history, and study it often, and also as someone who builds various things, ive also experimented with otherwise outdated technologies and materials.. in my experience, a lot of old equipment and materials will last decades longer than anything made now... when working with wood, hide glue used since about 35,000 BC is still better than modern synthetics.. wool is better for outdoor use than any polyesters, and i fine linen twine is better at so many things than modern nylons
at some point, this country turned from what worked best, to what was cheapest to produce, making more profits.. and really, i can pinpoint this change having occured during, or soon after WWII
my theory is the war sparked a sort of mini industrial revolution within the country.. people had to find cheaper ways to produce things faster to supply the war effort, and the people here at home, when the war was over they hung onto those techniques and ideas to make more money
so when i go looking for antique stuff.. i focus my efforts to WWII or earlier, and use only non plastic materials, even replaced my nylon fishing line with linen twine, and use only hide and hoof glues for woodworking projects
(yes, this has gotten way off topic.. but eeh, its still interesting stuff)
