at the link below is a soft top on what is most likely an M38A1... i was wondering if anyone knows of anyone that makes a similar style soft top in the same, or similar color for a CJ5?

i agree, it looks very, very cool, and its doing a very good job at convincing me to get a CJ5 to dress up like that M38A1

hey.. if someone might happen to have a template for making a soft top from scratch, i would be able to sew in the plastic windows wherever i wanted, and dye the waterproof canvas whatever color i wanted as well

i have camo net, left over from when i was active duty army. i was going to lay it over my jeep and then cut the lines i wanted and sew in some velcro or something so i can put it on at night when i park it to keep the ****ers, i mean cats out of my jeep

curious as to what the camo top looks like.. might be cool for a little shade in the summer than just going topless... but wouldnt do much for cold winters

That is a cool looking top, it is not a factory original civilian top, it might be a factory supplied top used strictly by the military.

any way of contacting the photographer?

I don't know about anyone else here, but the very top, and frame looks an awful lot like my bestop with custom made rear windows. The doors look like a military issue.in other words, I think its a very well put together Frankenstein.

Didn't work the first time

Also there's a guy that lives on my road who loves to restore these old military jeeps. He has three currently sitting in his yard, all in different stages. Ill see if I can catch him one of these days and ask him about it. He more than likely will have some type of answer for you.

nope, not warm at all in the winters, or in the rain but will keep everything from using the restroom in the jeep when the tops off. that is the only reason my top is still on right now

Cool....what does that have to do with my comment? Or did you just like what I said so much, you just wanted to have it there with you? Heehee! ;)

ha ha ha, i replied to the wrong comment.

it was the frankenstein (fraank in stein, ha ha ha)

i havent bought a topless jeep yet.. still on the CJ7 vs CJ5 bit.. if i go with a 5 i wouldnt mind making it look like an M38A1... and should i have the jeep in front of me with the metal frame for the top, i dont think id have much of a hard time getting olive drab canvas and fabricating my own top

Nope, not hard at all. Just have a sewing machine and a way to lay it out and I imagine it'll be fine

i make and do everything myself.. why id even suggest buying one is confusing to myself, i do have a sewing machine, and the knowledge to make anything out of a fabric.. useful skill for someone who likes to be self reliant... it feels about a million times better to make something awesome for your vehicle, than going out and buying something awesome for it

Preach on brother man! Preach on! I totally agree with you there. The satisfaction of an accomplishment like that is just priceless.

is it one of those foot pedal powered sewing machines? or is it one of the early electric powered machines?... those old singers are certainly worth more than any of your walmart special machines that lack the power to go through anything thicker than denim.. i need to check some garage sales this spring to find an old one

I just inherited two from my grandma. The old foot pump style. They certainly are pretty neat to look at. I also got a pretty old underwood typewriter, and an 8mm film projector with old woody woodpecker and mickey mouse movies....nothing to do with jeeps, but still pretty cool.
