I have a 99 TJ and in the process of my last wheeling expidition i managed to snap the driver front control arm mount of the axle and mangle it up real nice. So today while looking at it an idea hit me. Would it be possible to real carefully cut the control arm mounts of the bottoms of the axles and re-weld them on the top? I figure i could gain another inch or so of clearence in those areas and locate the mounts up and out of harms way. Also if this is posible, would it provide any lift? Any ideas, suggestions, concerns would be greatley appreciated.

Don't do it, the uppers and lowers have to be close to parallel with each other, and any change will seriously mess up the front end geometry.

Agreed, it ain't gonna work properly. You will tweek the leverage making it not handle nearly the amount of stress and probably crack constantly. Besides they are supposed to move "with" each other at the same length, keeping your caster correct. You would also need to fix the stop issue too.

Imagine trying to grip a pipe and keep it from twisting with both hands on top facing down. Now grip it with a pipe going accross it like handle bars. It would be way easier to handle wouldn't it?

Now you could make it strong enough, but that would defeat the whole 5 Link set up.
