I think I am going to try and fab one myself. The $7k+ pricetags are over the top to me. It is an axle, tent, 35's, a frame and a tub. throw a couple of storage boxes on, powder coat the entire thing and call it good. Oh yeah, jeep tailights, fenders and logo's will finish it off nicely. You can even make a teardrop, with a lift, 35's and a dana under it for about 2k...

Anyone have anything like this, seen any for sale used, or have the fab know how to point me in the right direction I would sure appreciate it.

-Grumbles to himself- "$7k+...... why do all my toys have to be some damned expensive,... " -

Those are money! I want one too. Wish I had enough tools to fab one myself.

they would be nice....but... just something else you have to pay taxes on, insure, and pay for tags every year...

I don't have a tent with mine but I just bought a M416 Trailer for $375 a few weeks ago. It has the same wheel bolt pattern as my CJ's so wheels are interchangeable, has a HEAVY running gear on it, and the old 1/4 military trailers look cool behind a Jeep. You might also check out an M105 which is a 3/4 ton that is a little bigger. All you'd need to do if fab up a tent. G503.com has a trailer section on their forum.

Really? I've NEVER owned a trailer of any kind. You have to pay taxes on that?

Yeah, Nice huh?

You pay sales tax when you buy it either from the dealer if you buy a new one, or when you put tags or registration depending on where you live.
Then, at least here there is a yearly registration, insurance probably isn't needed because your auto insurance should cover anything you're towing at the time.

I know If I brought another yard ornament home, my wife would tell me to get rid of something else. although I did sell that extra utility trailer last month......

But, back on topic, I really think that trailer we're talking about is awesome. It wouldn't work for my family of 4, but for a couple, it is really a neat concept.

Yeah, I am just looking for something that sleeps 2. I spoke with my guys at Scorpion Motorsports and we are working out the logistics. There is a good chance we are going to build a prototype complete with an OverLand tent. Looking at including a generator and a fridge, possibly an A/C unit for the when it is brutal hot out. (Maybe, maybe not on the A/c). Jeep tail lights, fenders, bumper, and tailgate for the main cargo box. We are figuring about $2000 in materials and labor without the tent (the tents go for $1500.) We are also knocking around the idea of using the tent platform, similar to the one above, but using a high dollar (but not $1500), easy setup, 4 season tent that assembles and locks into the platorm and locks into eyelets or gromets on the platform. One of the best extreem weather 3 person tents on the market is only $400.00.

Looks like we may have an assembled product in about a month. Will throw up pics along the way.

.

The kicker here is you pay sales tax on it when you buy it, you pay registration fee, AND you get to pay property taxes on it too! Arkanasas is one of the poorests states in the nation and they tax EVERYTHING here (hmmm, wonder if those two go together somehow....). The two governer candidates are both talking about killing the sales tax on groceries (9.125% where I live) but then the politicians won't have their money to spend on pork so they're gonna raise the used car sales tax exemption to make up the money (right now if you buy a car for under $2500 you don't pay sales tax on it, anything over that you do).

Don't have to worry about that in Oregon. No sales tax, no licensing, easy. As long as someone can see your lights, you don't even have to have those. Piece of cake...

The trailers are FREAKIN SWEET. Now I want one. Here you pay the sales tax when you register the trailer, Insurance is taken care of by the vehicle. and tags once a year for like 20 bucks. I'm looking at that and thinking I may try and build one for my MSR tent. and have a place on each side for my kayaks. Yea, that would be sweet. All the Cargo in down under the tent area. I'm liking the idea...

There is a dealer here in town, they're pretty awesome (awesomely expensive)

AL has a one time sales tax payable at purchase or at registration. $20 one time fee for the tag. Trailer is covered on your vehicle's insurance when you hook it up.
Myself as well as a many other people in the state never bother to register their trailers and I have never heard of anyone (using them for private use) being stopped. The money isn't as much of an issue as the time spent having to mail off to get a state designated VIN number for the trailer and all the standing in line at the DMV. Our company trailer is licensed as required by the state and DOT.
Who was it on this board that cut the rear off of a wrecked Jeep to make a trailer? Used the tub, frame, suspension and axle. I would think that would be the way to go. All you need is a saw, a little welding and acquire the trailer ball coupler.
